Meh, don't worry I wasn't trying to criticise your opinion of the UK. Heck I don't like it and I'm supposed to be all patriotic right?

Personally I think our country needs some new history. Sure we have the Tower of London and Big Ben and Stonehenge and what have you but they're old. We need something new.. a step into the future. The Dome could've been it but it failed miserably. Something that says "not only do we have a diverse history, but we're innovating even now".

But we aren't.

Pffff. The last thing a beautiful country like England needs is more modernist atrocities. The reason I hate modern architecture is because the cool, new modern skyscrapers in London look exactly the same as the ones in Madrid, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Atlanta and Dubai. It's not English if it has no distinctive features. When I walk down the streets of London, I want to know I'm in London. When I walk down the streets of Dubai, I want to know without a shadow of a doubt that I'm in an Arab country, not San Francisco with darker-skinned people.

I have nothing against innovation, except that the form it's taking is to make the entire world into a monoculture. The actual manifestation of progress has been to erase whatever is unique and beautiful about a place, in favour of a single, modern standard which incidentally isn't beautiful anywhere, much less everywhere.

If Rome didn't have enough history for you, I don't think there can be enough history for you in one place...

Well, Athens might just have a slight upper hand on Rome, so could try that. The Acropolis is quite impressive.

Then I think that Iraq probably has the oldest civilized-related ruins to be found on the entire planet...

Anyways, if you are afraid of Rome's traffic, don't EVER go to Napoli... pure anarchy.

Yep... China's history dates from around 1500 BC, whereas the Greek one, in it's earliest form (Minoan, on the isle of Crete) dates from aproximately 3600 BC. So the chinese are obviously "overestimating" themselves :D
