I got the new hobby train thingy for my B-Day, I'm going to try to make a semi-automated train system with my NXT and RCX.

Sorry to hear that. That must have been a pretty big box though, if you had all of your lego in it and still couldn't tell what was inside. :p

If you want any of the 9V train stuff (the motors or conducting tracks) for it, get it now. They have discontinued that line due to production costs of the tracks, which has pissed off a lot of people I might add.

I haven't had much time to build Lego stuff in the last few months, and probably won't until the summer. I think I can still get my big carrier done in time for the Brickfair show though.

They're still making the motors apparently, as the motor box advertised on the Hobby Train box I've never seen before. And I already have 2 motors, the Ultimate Track Set, and a bunch of cars. The only thing that I've ever had trouble finding is the wheel assemblies and bogie plates. There are none to be had on BrickLink.

It was a big box. 4ft by 4ft by 4ft IIRC and full of boxes of car stuff (and lego obv.). TBH I probably won't miss the stuff but it's a shame to bin rare items plus it was worth an easy £100. Hell the technic truck with the phumatc grabber cab thing would have sold £50 ebay Buy It Now.

You probably saw the RC train motor, which will continue to be produced. I'm referring to the 9V system based on the powered tracks. The RC system has a number of shortcomings over the 9V line.

As for the bogies, I just checked and there are over a hundred sellers carrying those on Bricklink. :p Use the catalog to find specific pieces; the search engine there often gives weird results.

I need the complete wheel assembly though.

What are the shortcomings of RC? I assume lower power, less control range, less control?

The entire wheel/bogey assembly is built from from five or six smaller pieces. There are a lot of guys carrying the wheels themselves.

The RC engines run on batteries and are not quite as powerful. Apparently the batteries only last for a few hours, which makes them impractical for train display shows (the AC powered engines could in theory run forever). The IR range is also fairly short, something like 10 or 15 feet, and you have less room to build on the engine due to the big battery block in the middle.

They're supposed to come out with a new system in 2009 based on the power functions line introduced in Technic, but it will most likely run on the same tracks as the RC system and will be battery powered.

The reason I need the entire assembly is because it would cost waaaaay too much to buy from 5-6 different stores. And most stores have a minimum amount that you have to pay.

Okay, by "complete assembly" I'm assuming you mean this. Just skimming through the list, I see that this seller has all the pieces with no minimum order. You have to buy them in packs of two, although you need a pair of these anyway for one train car. The wheels seem to be rather pricey, but that might just be an expensive part since all the other stores have similar prices. You can probably get the stuff for less if you're willing to buy used.

Thanks CP! I looked, but since the parts were separate I didn't see them.

Kind of a coincidence that I was just looking at those instructions. That's my original train.

Cool, that one is probably the best of the freight trains. I only have one or two train sets but might try and collect some more off ebay or something.

I'll admit that the lack of any way to search for multiple items at once is something that constantly annoys me about Bricklink. I often want over a hundred different types of pieces when I'm looking to order, and it would be a huge time saver if the search engine could find the optimal combination of stores for you.

Maybe they got the search engine from HLP. Or vice-versa. :D

This has been ready for a month but I finally got around to taking pictures of it yesterday.

A short description is available here.

This ended up getting second place in the public voting at the Brickfair event, which was unexpected and pretty impressive given some of the competition there.

The set I've always wanted is the original moon landing set 565, the one that way pre-dates even the non-articulated minifigs. IIRC the original release had a plain grey baseplate and a later release had craters molded into the base.

Gotta love how the astronauts had to be decapitated to install their 'helmets'.

I never owned the moon landing set but I did have one of the police sets. The motorcycle cop had to be taken apart in the middle and assembled as part of his bike. Robocop years before the movie! ;)

For the record, my very first LEGO sets were 615, 435 and 192. I'd put all six of the police arms together to make one large robot arm. Their hands frequently became control levers, lights or laser guns.
