Ufff da.... In Win 7 Aero must be enabled otherwise the model preview window will be solid light grey.  This means you can't have studio max 9 running and pcs2 at the same time. 

Probably driver issue.

edit: Studio max 9 and earlier (i don't  know about 2008)

Newer Max (2009) doesn't shut off Aero does it?  I noticed this problem with Max 8 but not with Max 2009.

They're not stable.  For the most part the pof saving is broken right now, to my knowledge.  Unless it's been fixed since the last time anyone released a 2.1 based build.  Code is publicly available though if you want to make a build.

Kaz, there was a bounty put out for the specific feature he was working on.  This was also just speculation on my part.  I would like to see those patches get into the main code soon though.

though he did give me patches a long time ago they didn't work with trunk so i asked him to port it and give me the patches.

We'll get it, don't you worry.  Threatening the license though isn't going to be very effective, all that does is give you the ability to sue him for distributing modified code without the sources (although he has offered to make them available, it's just been hard getting a hold of him).  You wouldn't actually sue him though, I doubt, so it's kind of a moot point.  Have you directly contacted him recently to see if he would make the new patches available?

i have attempted to contact him in the past over and over and never get patches that work with head

Well all of his recent releases were made using the 2.1 alpha version of trunk, so whatever he's using now should work with the current (or a more recent version) of trunk.  *sigh*

I have a problem with selecting subobjects with OpenGL VBO activated ,whenever I try it PCS2 crashes. (the error pops up and when I close it ,it appears again)
I also have noticed that PCS2 is missing one of the features of PCS1 ,namely squadron insygnia editor.
It would certainly come in handy for some people ,I don't like this editor in PCS1 ,because it doesn't show current position of the insygnia.
