FS1 isn't included?
In regards to what I said in the other thread: FSPort is FS1 as much as WINE is Windows.

Well no, the exe isn't, but just about all of the retail data can still be gotten in some form, can it not?
wat

I was referring to the Installer .exe versus the Java version of the Installer.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Aardwolf was talking about V's freespace 1 executables and not the installer exe. The fact that the original freespace 1 executables aren't in the fsport, but all of the retail freespace 1 content can still be gotten in some form is what aardwolf was talking about.

In regards to what I said in the other thread: FSPort is FS1 as much as WINE is Windows.
This relation is bad. The WINE project made all of their own stuff themselves. Fsport is a half and half deal. It utilizes original game content and user made content.

I hate it when S-99 agrees with me...

Not to say that I agree with everything he says, or even all of what he's saying here though.

The thing is, the mediavps have almost as much :v: content as fsport. But pointing out that it was 'inconsistent' to take down the FS2 retail and leave up FSPort isn't going to get FS2 data back up there--if anything, it'd probably just get FSPort taken down... which would really suck.

Edit: I was wondering, while talking to S-99 on IM... does the FS1 retail data (the stuff installed from the FS1 CDs) run using FSO?

You mean, can one play FreeSpace 1 with FSO? No. Too many differences. The missions, for example, have a different structure. That's why it was ported. Because it just doesn't work like "Here's FS1. Play it with FS2/FSO".

So the ported missions of the fsport is the desperation for keeping it up for download. How exactly were the missions for it ported though? We're they rebuilt one by one for fs2, or converted with some kind of program?

Problem is, you can't just take the retail data from FS1, drop it in you SCP mod directory and play Freespace 1.  Too many changes had to be done to it to ensure that it worked ok.  I suppose the FSPort data could be crippled, possibly remove the availability of the voice pack or something, and require you to grab those from the retail CD.  That may not have changed from original FS1, not sure.  Either way I hope anyone who buys FS2 grabs FS1 + ST anyway, since retail FS1 will always play a bit differently than FSPort.

...except it's not.  As chief pointed out, certain elements of the data (like the mission files themselves, the soundtrack, or the beefed-up models/textures/effects) are completely different from retail FS1, so a straight-up copy wouldn't work.  As far as those that were unchanged, there is the option of removing things like briefing animations and cutscenes from the Port site, though I don't know that that step is really necessary either.  In any case, we're certainly going to encourage anyone who asks to purchase both FS titles through Good Old Games; there's no reason that playing the Port and its related campaigns on FS2 shouldn't preclude one from trying out the original game.  There's just something about that low-res all-green HUD...

And castor, all of the GOG titles purportedly run just fine on XP/Vista, though I haven't purchased any yet myself.  I never had any trouble installing/running retail FS1 under XP, though.

The soundtrack, the beefed up models textures and effects are also completely different for fs2 also. Technically you can consider fs2 a port over to the fso engine. Why  not a model where fs2 gets distributed just the same way as the port? With the port you are forced to have the ported missions and beefed up music effects, etc. After that the only thing your missing is the fso engine...which is free and available anyhow. For fs2 we have the mediavp's and we already have modified missions to incorporate mission fixes and integration of new level backgrounds. Having a model similar to how the fsport is distributed is almost the same as how fs2 is distributed here.

The only difference between fsport and fs2 is that you could play vanilla fs2, with the port you can't play retail fs1. Everything for playing fs2 in the installer is almost there, it's just that it's got some pretty bad holes in it that will prevent people from doing it. Stuff missing like the single player missions, but keeping the multiplayer fs2 missions in there? And missing nice stuff like the cbani's, sound affects, and voice files.

Which is why the media vps are still available.

No you can't. You can load FS2 data directly with FS2_Open, but you can't load FS1 data directly with either FS2 or FS2_Open. You're trying to force the relation between FS2_Open and FS2 to be the same as the one between FS2 and FS1, which it clearly isn't. If you can't see that, you have bigger problems than obtaining retail FS2 files.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Yeah, but the port has already been ported. The fsport still does have its similarities with fs2 open either way, yes there not exactly the same.
The main issue is that the bare essentials for getting the fsport up and running are there, but the bare essentials for getting fs2 open up and running are not (some of them are there like the media vp's, but lacking stuff like cbani's, missions, voice files).

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
Indeed. If you don't like it, don't download it.

As far as I understood, you, my dear S-99, have been trying to state that FS1, FS2, FSPort and FSO are all the same thing. I must say  :wtf:. I a nutshell,

- FS1 was the original FreeSpace game that started it all. A full game. Proprietary software.
- FS2 was the sequel to FS1. A full game. Proprietary software.
- FSO, FS2_Open, or whichever acronym you wish to use, is the drastically improved version of the FS2 game engine. Just the game engine. Lacking any contents necessary for experiencing the game itself.
- FSPort ports the FS1 campaigns, missions, ships music and such to FS2. A mod. Not a standalone and certainly not a full game. Requires at least FS2 to run.

On at least three different occasions it has been stated that FS2 was included in the Installer because there were practically no means for getting the game from legal markets, apart from eBay where one might have to pay $70 for a copy. The point was to keep the game alive and possibly encourage certain factions to start publishing/distributing it again. Now, GOG is doing that. They're distributing the FS games. And with cheap prices. There is now a convenient legal method for acquiring the games. So, FS2 should be dropped off from the Installer. End of story.

If you don't like it, you can always warez0r it from the torrentsorz or HotU or whatever.

Sure, it might be more difficult for totally new people to get FSO running now that it isn't included in the Installer, but that's why at least I'm here. We'll help them. Explain what must be done in order to play FSO. Explain why GOG is fun.

Now if you'll excuse me but I'd like to have my breakfast.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
As far as I understood, you, my dear S-99, have been trying to state that FS1, FS2, FSPort and FSO are all the same thing. I must say  :wtf:. I a nutshell,
You almost got it, but in a skewed manner of what i was going after in which you totally hit a miss.

My main beef about was the fact that none of the fs2 elements are up for download anymore, not even the missions. On the other hand where the fsport which is up for download like the other mods in the installer. Unlike the other mods, the fsport uses content that was from an actual game along with user made content. This is where the fsport gets similar to fs2 open. Fs2 open is user made content along with the original game content also. Fs2 open is not a mod, but fsport and fs2 open do share the earlier mentioned details in common.

So, in effect to me, taking down the fs2 game content from the installer seemed a little inconsistent to me when the fsport is still up for download. Mainly just because of those two details i mentioned that the port while being a mod shares in common with fs2 open, they're both user made content mixed with V content.

In effect to me, if somebody wanted to remove the fsport from the installer and said, "no, you need to buy the game, we don't offer it on the installer anymore because that'd be an illegal download." I could see that flying because a similar decision was made for fs2.

I only see how half way calling the fsport a mod puts it in safe territory (because it is a mod), but rather, only because of the fact it's a mod...i say no. Mod is being tossed around here as though it automatically puts stuff in the safe zone. Fs2 isn't up for download anymore, but we still got fs1 in the form of a mod...we can do whatever the heck we want with it because it's a mod...it has similarities to nothing else because it's a mod. I don't care that it's a mod, it is also proprietary V fs1 content up for download.

This isn't about the fact that i don't want to buy the game. This is about the fact that my fs2 cd's are in another city right now. Which got me to try out the installer again in which i was so surprised i had to look twice to make sure that i actually saw what i saw, and that was none of the normal fs2 content (that was a really wierd experience). And at the same time i got to looking at the list, and i was like why is the fsport still up for download while fs2 isn't? It really doesn't matter to me that the fsport is a mod, it still has those damn similarities i mentioned which i found highly odd.

On the notion of the fsport not being stand alone i really sort of beg to differ. With the state of the fso engine, you could turn the fsport into a standalone game similar to what btrl did, that's the only reason i said that because the engine offers this flexibility to let it happen. The fso engine doesn't care what mod it has to load, but rather that is has one to load. And mods can be constructed to be stand alone as long as they have the necessary stuff, in this case for the fsport to be stand alone it'd need stuff from fs2.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
If we follow your logic, we should also take down

- BtRL, because it has BSG content
- TBP, because it has B5 content and
- Derelict, because it has a reskinned Iceni,

for starters. In addition, the Homeworld and Halo TC's should also die a terrible, terrible death.

The term "mod" is quite useful in this case. If you try to run FSPort, the whole FSPort and nothing but FSPort, you'll notice that it won't work. It's not "FS1", nor is it standalone. It required FS2. It might be sort of like FS1, but it is not FS1. It gives the people the chance to experience what happened during FS1, and is especially useful for those who are unable to get FS1 running on their computers (I'm thinking about Mac and Linux users here). But it also makes it clear that it is most certainly not the original game. And to fully experience the original game, one must purchase the original game.

And I dare to suspect that the FSPort team has no intention of making FSPort a standalone.

i really sort of beg to differ.
So which is it? Do you beg to differ or are you just going to sit down quietly and mumble some objections? I may be dumb, but I can't figure out which one you mean.

I have nothing more to add to this conversation. If someone else wants to say something to one direction or the other, please, help yourself. And if you, S-99, still think that including FSPort to the Installer is the single most gruesome thing after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, you can easily state your opinions by boycotting the Installer. And even HLP.

Re: FreeSpace Open Installer! Download it now!
And castor, all of the GOG titles purportedly run just fine on XP/Vista, though I haven't purchased any yet myself.  I never had any trouble installing/running retail FS1 under XP, though.
Yea I guess. I just remember the attempt I made to install FS1 on winXP years back.. didn't get nowhere with it. Though I admit I didn't have the patience to juggle with compatibility options etc. back then.
