Technically... You don't. FS2_Open developed by Source Code Project is free to get. MediaVP's developed by FreeSpace Upgrade team are free to get. All community-developed mods and stuff is free to get. Trying to ask for payment of these things would probably be called upon pretty soon by the powers that be...

However, you do need to own the original FreeSpace2 data for any of this stuff to be of any use to you (excluding total conversions and other standalone mods). For the longest of time, this gem of gaming was not feasibly available, so it was kind of accepted as a necessary evil to distribute the game data in one way or another. This changed when GoodOldGames begun to re-distribute the game among others at very reasonable price, so that is why things are as they are.

Well, so I invested the money in the retail to get the MVPs, but after downloading the lot of it all I get is the same contents, which seems a bit odd. Are the MVPs corrupted in this downloader? I remember the last time I used this (years ago) it went all smooth and I had no problems in getting the MVPs to work, but now

You need to select the 'mediavps' folder in the Launcher.

And you need to actually run the game through the Launcher using a 3.6.10 build.

We'll walk you through it if you need any more help.

I believe that there is currently a problem with the installer downloading corrupt mediavps. Check Lobo's signature for links to direct downloads to get the mediavps.

Cancel, restart the Installer but deselect the cutscenes. After the Installer has finished, download the cutscenes (.ogg or .mve) from freespacemods.net.

Hi, I'm on Arch Linux 64-bit. I can't get the game to run. I used the installer to install to ~/FS2SCP. All of the information on installation is very scattered, do I still need some retail files? (Yes, I own the game, and have the discs.)  If so, which files, and where do I put them? All of the tuts are windows-centric and just tell you to install the game first, which obviously isn't possible on Linux. Furthermore, when I try to run the game from the command line, it yells about not having openal, which I do have. I assume I need to make a symlink or something, but I have no idea where it's looking for it in the first place.

Basically you'll need all the .vp files from the disks. And of course a Linux build (check the FSO 2.6.10 RC2 link in my signature). Once you have those, and the things you've downloaded so far, you should be able to play. And since you'll then have a Linux build, you won't need to WINE it.

Thanks, I managed to install the game in Wine, and I copied the data folder over to where I'm attempting the Linux install. Is this all that's needed from the CD? (I couldn't get the script to work.) Also, does that binary work on 64-bit? It's complaining about the wrong ELF type...

EDIT: Copied the rest of the files and now the game starts (I had to use the RC1 Executable, I guess I'll just have to compile a 64 bit binary for the final release). So do I need any extra files to tweak graphical settings, resolution, etc? Thanks a lot, sorry for the trouble.

The emphasis is on the .vp files. They are container files and have the majority of the data used by the game.

The MediaVPs contain awesome graphical improvements. A list of command-line options is available here. There is also some kind of a Launcher for Linux, if you want to try it.

Cool, most seem to work fine, but I can't figure out how to change the resolution... I read somewhere that it was -res, but I'm not sure on the actual usage.

I make no claims about the binary working well on anything other than 32bit Ubuntu derivatives, although I'm sure most 32bit platforms can run it.  64bit I don't know enough about to even say whether or not it should run.  Perhaps the environment lacks the necessary support to run a 32bit binary, or there's something particularly wrong with the build, I can't say.  I can say that I do suggest compiling your own build on linux as opposed to using the released ones, it's probably more reliable.  Just get the revision from SVN stated in a release thread if you want to make sure it matches, we may even put up a source checkout at some point for ease of compiling.
