Who's gonna see LOTR when? :D
They didn't have a choice really.  In order to cover the whole book, they would've needed a 6 hour movie with like a billion dollar budget

That said - I've read the Hobbit and know a moderate amount about fantasy (I am making Opal Spheres  ) And lets face it... the Hobbit in the film looks nothing like the Hobbit portrayed in the books. Still, I guess you have to make some concessions to Hollywood

There are parts left out. See my spoiler post to see which. But hey - for the books that they're doing the movies after, only 3 hours is an incredible feat!

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

In the beggining of 2001 I made myself a deal that I would read all the books before going to watch the movie. Well, I decided to start at December 1st. Well, I thought I'd never get it finnished on time but when I got into it, all woken hours went into that book. I mean I began to pace myself so I wouldn't get it all read too fast. I managed to get it read before the premiere, but with my luck I'll only be able on the 29th. The book was great, and with all the hype and positive reviews I read and heard, I'm expecting a biblical experience!

I can avoid being in a crowded, noisy theater.

Actually, when I went, you could hear a pin drop. Almost all of the people in the theatre were 14+ in age. Most were 16+ and came with their parents. It was funny, in one part of the movie one of the orcs got his head chopped off, and the kid behind us said: "that sucks" I burst out laughing and had to slap myself to shut up.
I'll think of a siggie later..
