Hmm... Interesting performance definitely, but I have to ask why did they try make it sound that much like the soundtrack and not their own version about the theme?
I like Halo soundtracks. They are less repetitive than most movie soundtracks. It's not just the main theme of Halo that powers the music in those games. In fact I like some scores of the soundtracks way better than the main theme (or its versions). Perilous Journey/Peril (variations of same theme) comes to mind, and "A Walk in the Woods"... and some others.
Anyway... this particular quartet show was good work but nothing spectacular IMO. I mean, they did have the skills and they managed to get it sound like Halo, had a good arrangement and god synth samples and stuff and all. The song is recognizable and almost enjoyable... but. I wouldn't listen to it as I listen to the soundtracks. Reasons?
Mostly because the violin sounded like it was downtuned in overall (perhaps by 1/6 - 1/8 note or so), but there were also some glaring issues with off-key notes on some parts of it. Everyone commenting the videos in YouTube seem to be praising the violinist from earth to heavens, but I don't completely agree. The sound was good but note frequencies were sometimes bit off. Also, the violin theme there probably isn't technically as difficult as it may sound like, which makes me think like this was either a bit rushed or then she just has a habit of playing some false notes...
Also, I would've swapped the choir part from the guitarist to the violinist in the beginning. A string instrument played with a bow can more accurately imitate the characteristics of human voice, mostly because the sound is more continuous as opposed to guitar and like... but that's more like nitpicking.
I don't feel qualified to criticize the guitarist, basist or drummer in any other way that they sounded good.
It was a good show and good performance in overall, but I got the feeling that mostly it was about electrically engineering the sounds to sound more like in Halo soundtrack. All respect to electrically enhanced music, but I keep wondering how this would've sounded like without the synth samples. I think it's not necessary to make it sound that much like the Halo soundtrack, when the end result simply cannot be of same level with four musicians. So why bother make it sound half a choir/orchestra, half a band and neither properly? Just play the instruments as they are is my opinion...
I probably would've liked it a lot more without the unnatural choir samples and with a regular violin (tuned correctly).
