That's quite good, and it's sufficiently different enough from the original to warrant listening to it anew :) I liked it.

I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I really do like the Halo theme song. :D I find it similar to the BSG music in some respects (the latter of which I am in love with :) ).

The song almost sounds like it has heavy-metal overtones in it, which I like :)

Re: Freaking high school kids playing Halo theme.
Having never heard the original theme -- in fact, I've never even seen Halo -- I can only judge the song based on what I heard from the clip. The only person that can play reasonably well is the violin player, the others suck. And before you go off on a tangent; yes, I could do it better myself. And I was better at that age. Disregarding the violin parts, of course. Arrogant? Sure. A case of bloated ego? You bet ya. True? Absolutely. The theme itself is incredibly insipid and non-descript, but then again, that's another story. Hey, you asked for opinions, didn't you?

Re: Freaking high school kids playing Halo theme.
You do know that Halo is a game, not a movie...right?

So the appropriate term would be you've never played Halo, as opposed to never seeing Halo. Unless you've literally never seen someone playing the game Halo. In which case you're almost as much of a hermit as you would be if you didn't know that Halo was a game as opposed to a movie :p

Yes, I do know that it's a game, but you are correct, UT. I have never seen anyone ever play Halo, literally. Including myself. Hell, I've never even seen a trailer for it. Not interested.

Re: Freaking high school kids playing Halo theme.
Well for a video game Halo has a very unique and easily recognizable theme that if you've heard it a bit then you know exactly what game it is that is being played.  It has a distinctive style that draws on quite a bit of choral and string work mixed with some drums and so forth.  Its quite vivid and in some ways better than some of the epic movies...we're not talking Howard Shore, John Williams or David Arnold or anything like that...but for what it is.  Definitely well done and if the purpose was to easily identify the series with a musical theme...they succeed instantly.

As an aside, the wonderful music from the Halo 3 announcement trailer theme is now on iTunes for those who liked it so much.

While the performance isn't the same, this is the same group who did the talent show presentation I posted a while back.

I really like the more celtic take on the original violin parts.

Re: Freaking high school kids playing Halo theme.
To be honest, I've played Halo but didn't find the theme anything to right home about, it wasn't bad enough to remember, but not good enough to either.

It was a passable rendition, the guitarist was good at rhythm, and the Violinist was very skilled, but still, it just reeked of something that was chosen to be 'cool' rather than musically memorable, though trying to avoid the musician stereotype by doing a computer game theme is missing the point by quite a large margin.

ok i listened to it and its short of being crap, i didnt like it one bit, i mean i do my own music and its at the standard of music you get in stores. credit for trying but this is another one of those wannabies who really try too hard to get it correct.

Give me 2 weeks and a piano version of the Halo theme (oh god) and I'll have it ready.  Actually playing it in front of you guys is another story, however.

Re: Freaking high school kids playing Halo theme.
Hmm... Interesting performance definitely, but I have to ask why did they try make it sound that much like the soundtrack and not their own version about the theme?

I like Halo soundtracks. They are less repetitive than most movie soundtracks. It's not just the main theme of Halo that powers the music in those games. In fact I like some scores of the soundtracks way better than the main theme (or its versions). Perilous Journey/Peril (variations of same theme) comes to mind, and "A Walk in the Woods"... and some others.

Anyway... this particular quartet show was good work but nothing spectacular IMO. I mean, they did have the skills and they managed to get it sound like Halo, had a good arrangement and god synth samples and stuff and all. The song is recognizable and almost enjoyable... but. I wouldn't listen to it as I listen to the soundtracks. Reasons?

Mostly because the violin sounded like it was downtuned in overall (perhaps by 1/6 - 1/8 note or so), but there were also some glaring issues with off-key notes on some parts of it. Everyone commenting the videos in YouTube seem to be praising the violinist from earth to heavens, but I don't completely agree. The sound was good but note frequencies were sometimes bit off. Also, the violin theme there probably isn't technically as difficult as it may sound like, which makes me think like this was either a bit rushed or then she just has a habit of playing some false notes...

Also, I would've swapped the choir part from the guitarist to the violinist in the beginning. A string instrument played with a bow can more accurately imitate the characteristics of human voice, mostly because the sound is more continuous as opposed to guitar and like... but that's more like nitpicking.

I don't feel qualified to criticize the guitarist, basist or drummer in any other way that they sounded good.

It was a good show and good performance in overall, but I got the feeling that mostly it was about electrically engineering the sounds to sound more like in Halo soundtrack. All respect to electrically enhanced music, but I keep wondering how this would've sounded like without the synth samples. I think it's not necessary to make it sound that much like the Halo soundtrack, when the end result simply cannot be of same level with four musicians. So why bother make it sound half a choir/orchestra, half a band and neither properly? Just play the instruments as they are is my opinion...

I probably would've liked it a lot more without the unnatural choir samples and with a regular violin (tuned correctly).

That's quite true. Any violinist who's played a Bach gigue (meaning any violinist) can play that.

They don't play together but it's the Halo theme which is nice. Except for crappy synths.
