Re: What browser do YOU use?
:wtf: Firefox isnt as perfect as you would like to believe rictor, thats a reason why i use more then one browser, and educated person would use more then one browser, so if one doesnt work another will take care of the job ;) besides, I find opera to load webpages much faster. And downloads run at my full connection speed, where firefox doesnt even use half of it.(opera downloading at 1.2MByte/s while firefox downloads at ~550 KByte/s and yes, BYTES not BITS)

I use Firefox. Can someone explain to me how browsers determine download speed?

Re: What browser do YOU use?
Mathematically defined, the speed of transfer is the first time derivat of the amount of data trasferred:

s = dD / dt

where s is the speed of download, D is the amount of data transferred and t is the amount of time passed. Small d represents delta, ie. the change of time and change of data transferred. ;7

In plain text: take a big file, download it and take the time used to download it. Filesize divided by the time used is average download saving speed. Then you need to do the test on same speed connection with multiple browsers and compare the nominal speed of your connection with the results the browser downloads give.

To be honest, most of the time the browser's download speed doesn't matter nearly as much as the general browsing speed and feel. Most files I download using some download accelerator anyway, and only use browser to download files from places that have prohibited download accelerators. I'm used to WinGet 1.9 and it usually does the job nicely, so I keep using it (and it's freeware as opposed to later versions of WinGet).
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Re: What browser do YOU use?
Opera is a must have.

If you use Firefox, try Firetune http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Browser-Tweak/FireTune.shtml

The Google Web accelerator (which works very differently) causes me some problems.

I'm also using http://www.opendns.com/ successfully.

FireTune isn't working for me. It's asking for disc 2 (???) during installation. I checked the link, but I couldn't find anything but general information. Do you know where I could get some support?

That is a strange error!

Here's the home page http://www.totalidea.com/content/firetune/firetune-index.html or
Try the download from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/FireTune_d4534.html

Or, use this plugin http://fasterfox.mozdev.org/ which does the same thing I think. Firetune has a nifty configuration menu though. Also, the prefetching links part of fasterfox can cause weirdness sometimes.

Re: What browser do YOU use?
there are several reasons why firefox dont use the full stream.

just remember your living in a community, and the people around use the same wires you do, that can greatly reduce the download speed of your connection, it could just be a complete co-incidence that your download speed is cut in half or you could be on the wrong site.

i always use firefox for everything, i stay away from IE altogether, viruses, spam, mealware, trojans etc.
ive had alot of bad times with IE.

the internet is like real life traffic, grid locks, trailbacks, creepers etc. so it can slow you download speeds down.

Re: What browser do YOU use?
Strange as it may be, one of the main reasons I started using Opera was because of the.... transfer panel!  :nervous:

Seriously, I hate IE's and Firefox's transfer panels, they're ugly and somewhat less pratical.

Re: What browser do YOU use?
Opera, except for those few sites that don't work properly with anything but IE. I've tried Firefox but it's slower and more bloated than Opera, and I really don't like the necessity of bloating things even more with plugins. Opera has everything I need in a much smaller, faster package, so it's a moot point.

Thanks. I downloaded it again, and it's working fine.

Re: What browser do YOU use?
no they arent dude, they are pronounced differently. Don't try to argue because your totally wrong. And i dont see anything in that like that quotes Oprah and Opera to be the same. In fact, it doesnt even mention her.

Oh crap, misread your post  :o

I thought you were talking about opera browser and opera theatre.

Anyway, anyone knows how to disable the annoying new torrent thingy Opera has?
