X-Com

Right I've landed my VTOL plane. Now to get all my troops out. A wait, an alien just wandered up and threw a grenade into the plane. Now everyone is dead. That was fun :-). Masochist. Don't get me wrong it's one of the best games ever made. Just not exactly fun IMHO.

Hehe.. I'll have to agree there. It's good fun too, but the masochistic aspect of fun rears it's ugly head many a time in all the X-Com games.

Super Mario Kart battle mode. Never, ever, gets old.

I think I literally spent weeks of my childhood playing Mario Kart battle mode on the snes back in the day. Good times :)

Yeah, I "cheated" and saved after every turn... and sometimes after every shot.  One of these days I'll go back and replay it the real-life way. :)

Most fun? Hmmm... Crash Team Racing (was that pre 2000? I don't remember), Theme Park and Tetris. Oh, if CTR is post 2000, put Hot Rod 2 in its place. I would say ZZT, but there was more fn in modding that than actually playing it.[color]

If we're looking at only 1996 or earlier now, then Lemmings, Descent 2 and C&C, in that order. Mission Critical would get an honorable mention though. The deep story and immersive atmosphere were among the best I've seen.

I don't think I've ever seen anything remotely like that happen, even in TFTD, which is MUCH more difficult.

Yay! SPYHUNTER FTW!

I liked games such as Attic Attac and Manic Miner on the Spectrum. Mystic Mansion, Track and Field and Knightmare   on the Commodore 64 and the original Tombraider literally blew me away when it was released (literally  :drevil: ;7).

Games were more fun early in gaming's history because you couldn't disguise a poor game design behind flashy graphics and presentation.

I've never beat TFTD, is it even possible? I'd usually give up after shooting the lobster alien like 37 times and he'd still slaughter my entire team...

Re: the most fun game played (classic games only)
The three games I played on the PC when I got them, and I mean constantly were Doom, Descent and System Shock.  Those would have to be my favorite old-school (well, getting there) games.  Descent 1/2, Doom 1/2, System Shock 1.  2 was good, but in a different way.  1 wasn't as creepy as 2 was, but it was excellent nonetheless.

I'm not sure myself. I've learned that TFTD ramps up the difficulty on you quickly if you do very well, though, so perversely losing half your squad every once in awhile keeps things manageable.

I did once have a save where I was just short of going to the final level, but then the game stopped working for me and I had to reinstall, which wiped it clean.

And the Lobstermen are a pain. I work on and off on a strategy guide for TFTD...well, this pretty much sums up my opinion: "You will learn to hate these critters just as I have. 3+ Sonic Rifle hits can be required to drop one, or 7+ Gauss rifle shots, 18+ Gauss pistol shots, or as many as five Sonic Pulsers. Yes, they are indeed that good at absorbing more fire then they have any right to. "

The problem is, if TFTD is anything like XCom, it takes a long time to train up decent men. Losing one is a real setback. So how about this. Take along some useless low stat rookies as cannon fodder. Have them take point all the time whilst your experienced guys follow behind and mop up.
