Hints of Voltions Grand Sceme?
From the current background... well, I never really looked at Summoner, fantasy games aren't my tribe, but RF was essentially a Descentoid thing with multiple vehicles, and FreeSpace started out an extension of the Descent thing without walls (Descent: FreeSpace), and there are already 3 Descents, so... another Descent?

huh? RF is a FPS, and you don't pilot much stuff in the game.

Ans Freespace was just using the name "Descent" for advertising purposes. In Europe it is called Conflict: Freespace because the Descent series didn't sell that well here.

From what I've seen, Descent and FS had more similarities than that. Aside from the game engine and modding equipment being almost identical in the original versions (they have evidently gone down separate paths since then, FS1 and Descent 1 were very similar while D3 and FS2 are radically different), there isn't a lot, but they're still related.

And is an FPS really all that different from Descent? Think about it: one guy with tons of weapons vs. 4000000000 frail aliens in a confined space? Not to mention the Aegis thing, which was evidently quite a bit like Descent... Face it, this is Volition's forte.

Sorry to burst ppl.'s bubbles here, but [V] is most likely working on kiddie's titles.
This is not another make-fun-of-the-topic post. I'm serious.
Have you noticed what THQ's new lineup of games are? I mean, a Rugrats game that looks like it should be on Gameboy Advance, and not PC, it's just pathetic.
And if they ARE working on a new mature, or at least semi-mature game, it won't have anything to do with FS or Descent, as Intercrap still holds all the rights.

Maybe we can mod them to have Shivans and handheld mass drivers...

master pieces? im sorry but THQ has ruined volitions style

volition also needs to learn to write for linux because it's growth is geometric and already at a high rate this year

furthermore then need to learn to code OpenGL in the first place

Writing games for Linux systems is a waste of time and effort, as the 'platform' stands right now. I use the term platform loosely in this case, because no two linux distributions are similar enough and stable (layout, not crash wise) enough to bring a decent ROI. Until there's a consistent, stable platform that the average gamer can work with, there won't be a big enough return on games on these systems.

I do, on the other hand, agree with you completely about OpenGL/AL.

Sorry to yell you this, Kazan, but Windows, although it works like **** , is still the most predominant OS by a lot, and therefore most games are made for it. I guess you have to wait for an emulator.

Isn't OpenGL from 3DFX's day?
I thought that went when they did...
P.S. I really miss 3DFX

I think that there was just a report out that Apple and Linux take up 3% of the OS market each. Guess what the only other OS with a mentionable percentage at all was.

Which is really depressing, because Windows DOES suck, is second only in suckage to Mac OS. And because I'm planning to convert to Linux in a few months, meaning no FreeSpace or much else...

Well, since there seem to be so many Linux-users in this community, how about making a fan-made FS2 (2!) that's available for Linux (if IC would allow it)

mmh? OpenGL was created by Silicon Graphics, and there's no link between them and 3DFX.

Stryke: I've read somewhere, indeed, that FS1 and descent shared the same 3D engine. After comparing both, I really don't see what's the same actually: the descent engine uses only 64*64 maps max, fs2 256*256. Ok, so that can be an imrovement. Then descent Zbuffer is perfect, while FS1/2 one is ... just pathetic. Now that's a big step backward. Desent deals with high polycounts better, whilefreespace needed high end comps when it came out. Don't tell me it's 20 ships per mission using 256*256 maps that will make the difference. The AI of descent required much more comp resources than some higher res maps... Really, they would have used the descent engine as it was, with just the map improvement, it would have been oh so much better than it was already. FS2 ai is crap, while D1 (how old it is btw?) was, and still is, a high standard for AI. The bots never bumped against walls, they could follow the player in tortuous corridors, they could dodge shots with real efficiency... oh well, I'm completly OT there

About Volition, I wouldn't mind anybody else making FS3 (Outrage?).

I wouldn't mind that, considering they both are the same kind of company, which is understandable because they wer both Parralax.

If outrage made it (not a bad thing) it would lose the volition style... if it's not by volition it's not freespace.

I agree completely... Red Faction was fun (well kind of... only played the demo anyway ) but it wasn't a quality product. Summoner is a nice game but not a masterpiece. I seriously hope that THQ doesn't screw up volitionc by making screwed children's books.

Do you really think they'll use a company with a track record of attracting teens with popular, violent games based in futuristic settings to make simplified, condescending kids' games, a genre that has hardly even left 2D? Nah. More likely, Volition'll rot or get "downsized", if THQ really is only interested in kiddie stuff.

but the volition style? Come one, where it is? gfx wise it's common. Musics and plot? Any compabny can do the same. If Volition is out for FS3, trash Volition I say. Anyway, I'm not looking anymore after FS3, you see, padre, I've lost faith, and now I'm wandering in the filthy paths of Iwar2 pirating occupations, may the Higher Spirit of Koubadoumdoum forgive me
