Why did they choose 'Descent', and not something else (something more FreeSpacey, perhaps) to avoid those trademark issues?

Hey, it worked on me. I saw the FS1/Silent Threat package at K-Mart for either 5 or 10 dollars, saw the Descent name on it and I bought it. I was thinking it actually had something to do with Descent. I got it home, booted it up, and said WTF is this? I kept playing and I got hooked on it. A few months later I found the 3 cd package of FS2 and on Amazon.com and ordered it without hesitation.

It was the total opposite for me. I picked up a copy of Descent 3 thinking it had something to do with Descent Freespace. Big disappointment, no capital ships, no wingmen, etc.

I designed a campaign that attempts to answer the questions about the Shivans.  I think I came up with a pretty good answer too.  Unfortunately, it isn't much past the concept stage at this point, especially considering I don't have FRED until I can find a Win XP install disc to install Boot Camp with ( I have done what I can in TextEdit though).  Also, very few questions are answered until the last couple of chapters (total 5).  Expect this campaign in chunks over the next several years/decades

You have failed. The truth is that there shall not be an FS3. Ever. Or at least it is highly unlikely that there would be one. Now be quiet and play FreeSpaces 1, 2 and Open.

Aye. Canon is canon, but it is not wrong for people to vision their own stories, continuing on the events of the Capella incident. It is a driving force behind the whole FS scene we have now. With no "actual" conclusion to the story, people are encouraged to present their own theories in the form of mods/campaigns. If we were presented with an actual FS3... it just wouldn't work anymore.

I don't see how it would destrroy the FS modding scene. The modding scene existed before FS2 (starting from FS1) and would if anything explode after a hypothetical FS3 because of a newbie influx. People dedicated to their sequel projects for FS2 would ignore the canon continuity and continue on, acknowledging that their campaign violates FS3 canon.

Large parts of "FS3" are pretty much foretold, including the return to Earth. BETAC would likely make an Earth-GTVA war inevitable as BETAC leaves no room for an independent Sol System. The Shivans came twice during periods of major galactic conflict, and would most likely show up again during this war. Therefore, you'll get something at least vaguely reminiscent of Inferno or Blue Planet, except it might not have a procession of increasingly large megaships or rambling spiritual woo-woo philosophy.
