So apparently Rodney King has died.

While he was by all accounts (including his own) an incredibly flawed human being, something is owed to his memory; the incident that made him a public figure ultimately has much to do with the drive to clean up the LAPD and the lessons learned from it that were applied to most major police forces in the US.

The LAPD owes its current public image as a respectable institution, and indeed policing in major cities in general does, to a black man they beat up on a DUI stop. Funny how that works out.

Been drinking far more often, and appears to be increasing in volume per day
But it tastes so good

Had myself an ounce of Blue Label earlier today. Twenty dollar ounce sure, but it was a damned good ounce

Edit: I don't think I'm going to worry about my impending alcoholism. So long as I don't drink before work, I'm good

I opened my bedroom window yesterday evening because it was hot because our heat pump broke and my mamma hasn't bothered to pay to fix it because "the house looks bad" and she "needs to clean up before the heat pump people come". -_-

Well anyway, that was a bad mistake. I don't remember when I shut the window (probably around 10 or so) but when I stopped playing Minecraft with Jeremiah around one o'clock and turned off my computer, I found out my bedroom was crawling with bugs. Seriously. I killed like 30 of them and there were still more. They were even on my bed.

I got so disgusted that I turned off the lights, left my bedroom, and closed the door. I then proceeded to stuff a rag in the space underneath the door so the creepy crawlies wouldn't invade the rest of the house.

For some reason my dad was sleeping on the couch downstairs (probably because it's cool down there because the downstairs heat pump still works) and my mom was sleeping in the extra bedroom, so I slept the Master Bedroom for the night.

That wasn't the end of my troubles. I had a nightmare about Creepers.

I opened the garage door of my IRL house and there were thousands of them. All in a line. For as far as the eye could see. And they were all looking at me. I slammed the door and then I heard explosions. They were destroying the house! I ran upstairs and looked out the window and there was a tower of creepers going up to the second floor. They had stacked themselves one on top of another and the one on top was looking at me. The dream abruptly ended.

when it rains it pours. my laptop battery has now out and out failed. and the damn FIOS box in my bedroom closet keeps beeping. god forbid you let the customer open up the plastic case and swap out a battery.

Seriously man, if I was anywhere near wherever you are, I would drive you over one of my spare P4 boxes just so you could have something to work with. But I'm fairly certain you aren't anywhere in Canada, and mostly sure you aren't in Southern Ontario.

Seriously considering enlisting in the Army. I can't find a job around here, my dad can't afford to support me, and I can't afford to support myself if he can't. Gonna keep looking for the next couple weeks (and get started toward at least passably being in shape), but if I can't find anything by about the first week of July, that's where I'm headed.

At least with our FiOS box, you can open the case, but replacement batteries apparently cost two arms and three legs, so we're just living with the beeping.

Have you left College? If not, getting onto dat dere ROTC isn't a bad idea if the Army's a serious consideration. Don't you have a double engineering degree or something? How on Earth do YOU not have a job?

there's one part of the case that looks like it might supposed to be able to open, but i can't get it to without feeling like i'm about to break it. and if it's not D cells or something i won't be able to replace it myself anyway. if they want to charge me for them to maintain their own damn equipment, i'll either just live with it or find some way to break the beeper.

on the plus side, i finally got the email that they got my mobo in at the shop, and i only have a week and a half or so left before i get my desktop back. maybe i'll get even luckier and the electrical squeal noise from the mosfets will be gone. too bad it cost me $23 in shipping. $9 of which was just for the fking box that UPS didn't tell me they were charging me for. found it on the receipt when i looked at it to get the tracking number. bastards.

wow i'm in a pissy mood. i guess it beats one of my bouts of depression (not clinical, calm down). i'm gonna just blame it on the nasty ****ing chemical smell right outside our trailer at work today. smelled like super concentrated paint thinner or something, and it was all over the deck. gave me a hell of a headache.

Sidenote: Aim for being an Officer

Actually, I've got a bit to say about that, as I'm sure Dekker and such also will.

If you want to be a Commander, Leader, and Manager first and foremost, aim to be an Officer. Don't aim to be an Officer because you get to eat separately and occasionally have a whole room to yourself, and get called sir and all of that jazz. Those are bad reasons to want to be an Officer and I trust the appropriate selection agencies will smell you from a mile away.

If you want to be a specialist in your role, work in your role, and make a living doing the hard yakka without fighting the paperwork battle, go enlisted. Commanding, leading, and managing will come with time, but it's not your primary role (or at least, it isn't to my understanding. Dekker can clarify), your job specialization is your primary role.

There's an RMA Sandhurst adage that encapsulates Officership: 'Your men first - ALWAYS! Yourself last - ALWAYS!'

You won't 'be on top' as an Officer. In reality, you're at the bottom; you exist to serve your men and women. Always.
