i thought it was one of the best games that ive played in a long time. plenty of missions, lots of mission variety, lots of destruction. i like when you get the missile tank or combat walker, and you cant see whats directly in front of you because theres too many explosions and theres debris flying everywhere. id definately beats the **** outta the first 2 red faction games. the plot ties in heavily to rf1 and im not sure how rf2 fits into the scheme of things. there were even a few freespace references throughout the game. hearing subach corporation named on the news console and theres an achievement called freed space when you knock down 50 aircraft. i didnt like the fact that you werent allowed to pilot the planes anywhere in the game. when youre done it opens up the map and you can complete any of the missions you missed.
the game had some rather annoying civilian traffic patterns. the ai of which didnt know if you blew up a bridge. kinda funny watching cars drive over downed bridges falling and exploding. they also react in the worst possible way to collisions usually driving into you trying to push you out of the way rather than backing up and letting you by. i know rocketing the civilian traffic made my borale go way low. some of the vehicles had guns that sorta reminded me of interstate '76 and had some pedestrian carnage like carmageddon (however not done as good as either game). lack of variety in vehicle weapons was kinda lame.
i didnt like the whole games for windows integration and the joystick support kinda sucked. the game wouldnt see my joystick most of the time and when it did you couldnty bind everything to it. for example in wheeled vehicles you can bind the steering to the joystick, but you cant bind the forward/back to an axis, probibly a minor oversite or a bug in the code. but at least you can steer them with the joystick, makes them much less dificult to control. for tanks i managed to bind the rudder pedals to steer them freeing a hand to operate the turret with the mouse, however the game still doesnt see my throttle. walkers on the other hand i just use mouse and keyboard. the game reaks of conole type input code. like the tanks if you rotate the base more than 90 degrees in relationship to the turret the controls reverse themselves. but other than the shoddy input code the game was awesome.
