Was playing a game of BattleTech last night until about midnight. Was going brilliantly. I'd gotten an assist kill on a Mongoose, had knocked out the pilot of a Black Knight (would have qualified as an assist when it went down), and had helped down a Mercury, but gotten no kill for it. I had taken a grand total of 21 damage, so I was feeling pretty bold.
A Highlander appeard from behind a building six hexes away. I actually challenged this one to single combat, since I figured I could take him. I unloaded with two LB5-Xs (cluster) and three SRM4s at 4s and 6s to hit. I hit with everything, and all but two LBX pellets actually struck the 'Mech. I got three TACs, two on
both of his gauss rifle ammo bins, and one on a medium laser. I took 15 from the gauss rifle, another 15 from medium lasers, and ~15 from various other targets. I easily cleared the PSR.
Summary at this point: the enemy Highlander is down it's biggest gun, and half of its support batteries. It's LRM20 is useless at this range with his skill. I have no armor on my Right Leg. Everything else is peachy.
The next turn, he tries a DFA, since that would do more damage by itself than anything he had a realistic chance of hitting with. I opened fire with all weapons at 3s and 4s. I miss with an LB5-X and an SRM4. Every munition from all the weapons that hit also hit him. He takes another ~21 damage, and one more TAC on another medium laser. He's DFA'ing, so he can't fire weapons. An enemy Partisan tank hits me with
ONE AC2 ROUND. TACs my ammo bins using AP ammunition (which hadn't even been
prototyped at our point in-game

). I go boom, the Highlander falls on its ass, knocks out the pilot. One of my buddies headcaps it from there.
Summary at the end: I got one assist, on the Mongoose. I got shot down before the Black Knight was destroyed, so I get nil from that. My 'Mech went up in an ammo explosion, so I can't even salvage it. I didn't get the assist on the Highlander either, since I got shot down. The Partisan tank that shot me down got away without even any return fire. To top it off, I don't even have first pick of salvaged enemy 'Mechs, so I'm probably not going to get the Highlander I damn well wanted either.
Damn dice rolls.
