Dredd is a really ****ing good movie, and you should go see it.

For those of you about to burst out with an "I AM THE LEUUUUWW": Everything the Stallone movie ****ed up was gotten perfect here.

But what really gets me, and this is kind of surprising to be saying about this class of movie, is that it's actually very tightly plotted. Details are not done for cool or throwaway. They matter. Anderson is a psychic: not only is this used frequently, it's actually important to the plot. The multiple fire modes of the Lawbringer pistol are shown off, but each in an appropriate situation, each done well, and it feels natural that they'd be used where they are. The fact that the pistols are encoded to DNA is set up early, but it also pays off by saving Anderson's life. The slo-mo shots are not only given a story reason to exist (how many ****ing times can you say that?), the movie is very careful to use them only when that reason is in effect.

This is easily the best action movie I've seen this year. (EDIT FROM THE FUTURE: Looking back, it's probably the best one I've seen in the last five years.) Go see it.

Cleaning out my closet, I've found so many awesome things.

First on the list was a 1989 wall-sized world map.  That was cool.

Slightly less impressive, a 1:10 scale Harley Davidson Softtail die-cast model in a glass case.  Still cool though.

But most impressive was on the bookcase in there.  A complete set of Jane's Encyclopedia of Aviation (1980).  All five volumes of it.  Now I know why I was such an aircraft nut when I was a kid.

Recently created an account on LinkedIn. Found someone who I went to high school with. Hadn't heard from her in 5 years.

Evidently, she hit the "I don't know this person" button, and as a result I was henceforth unable to send invites to ANYONE without knowing their email. And without a pro account, you can't message people who aren't in your network.

And of course (although she probably doesn't care, and at this point I don't much care) she probably has no idea that her doing that had any consequences. I wonder, did she really not recognize my name? Or did she recognize my name but think "I don't know him [anymore]"? Or did she recognize my name and think "Where is the block button? Ah, close enough" ?

But whatever. It's over.

In conclusion: I ****ing hate LinkedIn.

unfortunately, that kind of harshness is necessary if LinkedIn has ANY hope of avoiding turning into a social network fad and remaining useful.  what they could use though, as made apparent by your situation, is some sort of appeal.  have you tried getting that restriction lifted by contacting them?

it's not supposed to be a social site, it's supposed to be a business site.  you're better off not adding people, even if you know them, unless they are relevant to your professional field.  i've turned down MANY "friends" and family members on there, as well as all of the randoms who are clearly just trying to make their list big (or want me to buy from their 'clothing company'  ).  i have very few contacts, nearly all from my university.  the ONE i don't know personally is the manager from a company i was looking at that does their hiring from there, and is the one who requested i make an account.
