Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over 24000!!!!! (pages)
Hard to get a sense of scale, but that looks too big to be a tick.  Probably some sort of beetle or true bug, or other generic insect that most of us probably would call a "bug."

Ah, maybe. It was quite small. Just a little paranoid after a recent roadtrip where ticks were an issue a week or so ago, was worried maybe they got brought back from the luggage. But it does look different, was thinking there may have been different types.

Probably just your standard bug though. Darn bugs.

It would be helpful to know your rough geographic location.  That said, doesn't look like a tick to me.

that awkward feeling when you get home from a rock concert and all normal sounds are muted.
My mouse instinctively moved to the "like" button on your post that doesn't exist.

I think I need to re-evaluate my life.
Fun while it lasted.

Then bitter.

Re: W-H-I-Y-L It's over 24000!!!!! (pages)
Been going over credit card security in my head since yesterday.  Turns out a group of five people using eight different credit card numbers stolen from the same person purchased $8,900 worth of gift certificates at our gift shop and cashed them out at the casino cage immediately afterward.  Two of the five have been arrested, and we're still on the lookout for the other three.

This got me thinking about how easy it would be for someone like me (fairly knowledgeable about credit cards and computers, working at the hotel front desk) to skim credit card information using the computers we have at work.  We have Verifone signature capture systems, but don't have them set up for customers to swipe their own cards yet, so we still take the card and swipe it ourselves.  Autorun is disabled, but USB drives themselves are not disabled in Windows, so it's still easy to run programs off a flash drive.  A simple keylogger would work, or something more sophisticated to only capture credit card magstripes and additional user-selected information (using a hotkey) could be written, as the credit card readers we use are simple USB HIDs.  Wouldn't be too difficult to capture the entire magnetic stripe (so, credit card number, expiration, and cardholder's name), customer's address (we take one at hotel check-in), and CVV (since we handle the card ourselves).  On top of that, since most of our hotel rooms are comped (being part of a casino) and we don't authorize a guest's card for a deposit (unlike most hotels), it would take longer for any of the card issuers to figure out that credit card fraud is originating here.

Our company policy says we can't use flash drives with company computers unless they're pre-approved by our IT department, but it's never been enforced.  I think I'll email some recommendations to my manager.

you could probibly put a device between the pin pad and the computer to log everything it does. this would nab you pin numbers and scan codes. assuming the card readers arent encrypting anything (some of them do, im sure, others are just a passive gizmo that talks to a computer and the encryption is done in software). this would net you hundreds of cards and pin numbers. of course the cops would probibly trace it all to your buisness, your computer, and figure out who was at the register that day. probibly not the best idea.

Yeah, it was fairly small, probably close to half a CM in size. As for location, Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm glad more than one person thinks it doesn't look like a tick lol

Minor progress on FPS engine! Got the physics of holding the gun with both hands working. Yes I'm doing it with physics... considering I'm already doing the dood's bones with physics it's hardly much by comparison.

Also it's late and I am tired. Fhtagn.

Trying to decide what to do with old graphics card(s).

A while ago my computer began BSOD'ing and some research determined it was the video drivers. Replaced, updated, and all sorts of shenanigans with different drivers, but never solved the problem, so I bought a new set and my problems vanished.

Now I'm unsure of what to do with the old cards. It's a pair of GTX 460's. Still decently powerful as far as graphics go, even compared to newer models if you put the two together with SLI, so it seems a waste to just trash them, but on the other hand I do not know if repair is possible, and if it is, where it would be done. :doubt:

i've got an extra vid card lying around too.  pretty much perfectly good HD 6950 that's been unlocked to 6970.  just needs a custom fan profile in MSI afterburner or similar to keep it from overheating itself in games.  or i guess you could use the manual control in catalyst if you can stomach the loud fan all the time.

i thought i somehow cooked it in the process of trying to flash my motherboard bios.  by the time i figured out what the problem was and that the card was fine, i had already talked myself into a GTX670.  turns out AMD got all up in the mobo bios's **** and somehow the new version detected the unlocked vid card and refused to post.  but a little bit of googling and bios editing later i came out victorious and my flashed 6970 worked again.

Had a fun time dropping a six foot long canvas board on my toe earlier today. Just got a sprain, slight bruise and no swelling, but still sore as the dickens.

Also laying back on the alcohol: no fear of being a luch, but the bathroom runs are seriously bad for sleeping normally.

Also started my "Modernist" phase in painting... and dear god, it feels great to be free of rational and academic chains. I just get to paint **** from reference photos and sketches than trying to paint fugly people. Hell, it even beats philosophy or science when you can just pick up a brush and throw paint on a canvas without a damn in the world.
Blame Blue Planet for my Freespace2 addiction.

Any idea what kind of bug this is? If it's a Tick, I will need to try to determine its source or possibility of another one lurking around.

I'm pretty confident it's a hemipteran (true bug) so, not a tick - ticks legs tend to be much less prominent, and while I'm not 100% confident I can see a true three-segment body (which would confirm it wasn't a tick) due to the blurry photo, it does have the look of an insect, rather than an arachnid - I think wings are covering the thorax-abdomen join.
