I HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF PACIFIC RIMSo my assessment? It's actually a pretty good movie. It's not the action-based perfection that Dredd or The Raid was. And it's a bit of a bumpy ride. When the human characters are on screen it's kinda cliche and predictable but it still works.
But it's like they replaced the whole cast and crew whenever you have the pilots suited up; it becomes a completely different movie. Not even with the giant robot fights, it's like somebody put in a completely different movie.
Now since the giant robot fights are why you're ever going to go see this: they're
amazing. It's not predictable, it's lovingly and gorgeously done, the 3D is good if you see it in that, it's pretty well shot. I didn't see it with 3D IMAX and I actually really regret that because it would have been holy **** amazeballs awesome.
One oddity: the Japanese Jager advertized in posters has very little screentime, and I'm kind of guessing Coyote Tango appeared at all. I
think it was Idris Elba's first ride but you never get a good look at it.
I was actually surprised they didn't kiss at the end, but walking out of the theater it makes sense. The Drift, which is the neural connection that makes working a Jager possible, requires two pilots who are, in effect, sharing everything. Kissing? Sex? If you've Drifted with someone, any other expression of intimacy is meaningless.
My other thought is that if they stage a prequel, it will be amazing. To put it into perspective the movie is at the Hail Mary play of the Jager program, when there are only four operational units left because all the others have been lost in action. At the height of the Jager program Anchorage, Alaska had a giant robot detailed specifically to its defense. Hong Kong had thirty Jagers stationed there. The possibility of seeing a thirty-Jager deployment is pretty much SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.
