Author Topic: Kazaa Is Dangerous  (Read 4223 times)

Of course, this doesn't have to do anything with FS or anything else we talk about here but I just want to say that Kazaa contains SPYWARE. I hope that you all know what this is.

I recommend that you download AD-AWARE which can be found here: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10106-100-7302674.html?tag=st.dl.10000-103-1.lst-7-1.7302674

It is a shame that developers added these programs to a such popular application. Please spread the word as much as you can.

I appologize for posting this if some of you knew about it allready, but those of you who don't please take this seriously.

Thank you for your attention.

PS also see user reviewes here: http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-1896420-601-7142396.html?pn=1&lb=2&ob=0&tag=st.dl.1896420.top.7142396-1

Thunder, why don't you post something about this in HLP's news or INFO section.

I'm soo glad this wasn't another 'They can access your C drive' thread.

Everything contains spy-ware nowadays. I for one couldn't give a rats ass. I don't have anything on my comp that anyone would bother prosecuting me for or is vitally confidential. And who cares if they know how big your hard-drive is or what programs you run? It just means they can make a little cash from providing you with a nice free means of obtaining totally legal back-ups of your audio and program files. This sort of anti-KaZaA crap is whipped up by little rejects thinking the problem is bigger than it is. All they're doing is some marketing research and they screwed up some code. Big frelling deal.

An example:

Someone was implying that this extract from the TOS was granting them free run of your computer.

4. Upgrades and Access....... (b) You hereby grant BDE the right to access and use the unused computing power and storage space on your computer/s and/or internet access or bandwidth for the aggregation of content and use in distributed computing. The user acknowledges and authorizes this use without the right of compensation. Notwithstanding the above, in the event usage of your computer is initiated by a party other than you, BDE will grant you the ability to deny access

All this means is that you let their servers take and share files (the whole point of KaZaA) and that if any cracker gets in they've made an uninstall option available to remove the crackers way in.

Um... better point a few things out :)

Firstly - I've known about Kazaas spyware for some time now, however you can minimise it by not selecting any of the optional programs during the install progress.

Secondly - I found that running ADAware and removing what it finds from Kazaa makes Kazaa non-functional. That might just be me though...

I've had no problems using Kazaa (the latest version) as long as you take steps to minimise the effects it shouldn't be to bad.

Oh, and if this degrades into a warez thread I'll lock it. K? :)

Ok
Have it your way. You may lock this or you may not it is your choice. I just wanted to warn everybody arround because I am a good guy and wanted to mention this.

Kazaa team never mentioned in their T&C that the program has spyware. :mad2: :mad2:

Is that permission I hear...err...see?

Anyway:

I think the warez thing was directed mainly at me. Or am I just being overly self-important?

I notice the link to the reviews takes you to an 'Only Negative' page. Hmmmm.

Besides, without KaZaA I wouldn't have the alternate ending to T2. The one where it shows you 30 years in the future where the war was averted and eveything continued merrily and John pushes his kid on the swing. I swear to god, it's real.

No no, at this stage its a useful thread and spyware is a part of the internet and so on, it should be talked about from time to time.

Hey guys, no need to miss out on having the best of both worlds: Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster all share files with each other, all work on the same network, and all have the same networking engine. I started out with Kazaa, but when I discovered it had spyware I moved to Morpheus - one of their "selling" points is that it has no spyware. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

correcto, i am running Morpheus, while it does slow down opperating speed to just over 200mhz, thats from the transfers going back and forth.

Well, thanks Thunder for supporting this topic

I just wanted to warn as much people as possible.

And I don't think that the government ( if you meen USA government) would shut it down. They don't care about that programe (of course I could be wrong).

Is there anything we can do about this? I meen, if we spread the word alot, those guys who made Kazaa would probably notice the lack of people who use the pragrame. I allready have all the MP3s i need so I don't need that crud anymore.

No problem with the topic support :)

I'm fairly sure there's something in the small print saying they can do what they like regarding spyware. Basically you put up with its small breach of your rights and download files or you don't use the software...

I think they've fixed it now but one of the Spyware programs that installed with KaZaA is a virus and actually installs whether you tell it to or not.

What I consistently fail to understand is why people even bother using KaZaA or Grokster (and circumventing the spyware in the process) when Morpheus doesn't install spyware at all...

hey there people I am back

I had some problems logging on network. That piece of *the s word( of Win ME had some errors on it so i installed Win 98 First edition. It may be old but it is much better than ME.

So about that virus

Here are some things I found out about it:

1. You can not scan it while you are doing file transfer with Kazaa.

2. The crud cpoies itself somewhere in Windows and when you are done with file transfer, you can't find it again in the shared folder

3. It activates every 26. of the month

I don't know anything more but that is just another reason why we should avoid Kazaa. I hate that piece of s**t so much :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: I think that we should do something about well, at least I can do here right now is to :bump: this thread.

Oh and  just to express how angry I am at Kazaa and @ssh'les who made it,  :snipe: Have a nice day

well, the reason is coz it's the first one I heard about, and now, my d/l list is never empty, so I can't bother deleting it, replacing it and searching for stuff I couldn't find for days again.
