Ship classes...new ones???
Just curious, what are the ship classes in between the FS ones?
I think Battleship is between cruiser and destroyer, and Carrier is between Destroyer and, erm, in real life, carrier's as big as you can go, but in FS, it's dreadnought, so, in between Destroyer and Dreadnought is carrier.
Any others?

Freespace uses an altered ship size to class name 'table' compared to real-life navies.

FS

Crusier
Corvette
Destroyer
Jugganoug(arg! Can't spell it)

Real Life

Destroyer
Corvette
Cruiser
Battleship

Or something like this, it's not my field of expertise. I'll happly stand corrected.

I agree with Tar-Palantir, except I think Corvette comes before Destroyer. Corvettes are basically large patrol boats, if I remember right. Some of them have missiles. I'm not an expert, either..?

Real life: (WWII era)

'Vette
Frigate
Destroyer
Cruiser
Battleship

Escort Carriers were roughly cruiser-sized
Fleet Carriers were roughly BB sized.

I always thought that the frigate came after the destroyer, size wise.

Probably yeah.

I define ship classes in FS like this (biggest to smallest)

Juggernaught
  Anything bigger than 4km long.
Carrier
Any warship from 1.5km to 4 km long (or whatever its largest dimension is) that can have more fighters/bombers than 90 times its longest dimension (in km). So a 2.5km ship would need to be able to hold at least 225 fighters (90 *2.5) as standard, to be considered a Carrier.
Destroyer
Any 1.5km to 4km (largest dimension) warship that isn't a Carrier.
Frigate
Any 800m to 1.5km warship, regardless of whether it has a fighterbay or not.
Corvette
Any warship from 500m to 800m without a fighterbay.
Dropship
Any warship from 250m to 800m WITH a fighterbay.
Cruiser
Any warship from 250m to 500m without a fighterbay, with the exceptions covered in the next category.
Gunship
Any warship smaller than 250m. Also, all converted freighters, regardless of their size, are lumped into this category.

I use the Brit system, that goes like this:
Corvettes
Destroyers
Cruisers
Battlecruisers
Dreadnoughts/Carriers

I added in juggernaught for the Saths and the Collosus...

But Volition didn't think of the Dropship classification. So the Moloch is no longer a Corvette, it's a dropship. :D

i go by this:

cruiser
Tactical carrier
corvette
carrier
dreadnaught
destroyer
superdestroyer
juggernaut

with the carrier being the same size as a corvette and a dreadnaught the same size as a destroyer.

heh, no. A dropship, it's like those little troop transport shuttles in Starship troopers. hence the name.

The Moloch is a corvette - [v] just wanted to distinguish it from the other corvettes by giving it a fighterbay, making up for the fact that it's not really all that good.

No, a transport that lands things on a planet surface is just a transport. Subspace is A-1 SUPAR! :D

And, no, no atmospheric gas would go through the subspace rift, unless by some chance it was vibrating perfectly with the space time continuum along with the ship (which has less of a chance of happening than Strom Thurmond spontaneously combusting). It wouldn't matter which way the ship was going.

A cruiser/corvette-sized ship with a fighterbay would be a better description of a dropship. It goes to an area, launches its fighters (hence the "drop"), and helps in the battle. Great for hit-and-run attacks that require some punch.

So, by my designation, the Moloch is a dropship, not a corvette.

Also, it's not that crappy in battle. Sure, its turret positioning is terrible, but it has clusterbomb launchers galore, which utterly slaughters your AI wingmates if you don't take care of those turets.

Except 'Drop' has stronger connotations for falling from orbit than dropping fighters.

Dropships are almost universally recognized as ships that do orbit to surface work.

A small, 'vette sized carrier would be......... an escort carrier!
