Those special FreeSpace moments...
Surgeon general's warning: This topic can and shall contain spoilers! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THROUGH FREESPACE OR FREESPACE 2!

Thank you.

I know you have had them. Anyone who has played through the game has had them.

The feeling of fear and anger as your wingmen are torn to bits and shreds by Scorpions when you first meet the Shivans, the feeling of unfairness that they did have shields and we didn't, the sounds of the great Banshee firing...

Who hasn't felt the Booya feeling of successfully demolishing the Taranis' engines without the thing blowing up, or the feelings of "ohgods I have no hull left and there's a flight of Dragons on my tail with huge big pointy teeth"? Let alone the feeling of shock and anger when you see our precious loved Galatea be lanced through by the Lucifer.

Or what about the first time you see the beam weapons in action? (true, for me it was: "...what the H just hit me?" as I was in the middle of the beam path) Or the first time you encounter a Shivan again, and slice through it with remarkable ease?

SO! What is your great FreeSpace Moment? Mods are allowed too (Just make sure to write out the name of the mod and link to it if possible)

Share the memories and let the world not forget this great game.

Yeah, that certainly woke me up.

My favorite Snipes line came in "Love the treason..."

"Of course, that's if they don't hang us for failing the mission. We might be pushing our luck here, but what the hell."

I love the completely dry way he says that, combined with the sound of an exploding Argo in the background.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
Gotta love Snipes. xP Forgot the exact quote with the bombs, but goodness. It still gets me snickering.

mmm...and, of course, the first meeting with the Sathanas. (And the first comment on that one froma mate: "Yep; the thing is a girl with a severe case of PMS.". Which he got hit in the head for.)

And one from Blue Planet. It got me all "What the F?" and ended up floating about in the nebula for fifteen minutes trying to find that ship that got across my view. Good thing I got those two friendlies as escort, else I'd seriously be lost.

Yeees, I forgot the name of the mission. Don't hit me.

Not to mention the personal mail from the Admiral. Alpha 1 having a name? While at first I thought it was a bad thing, I moved way beyond that and got deeply immersed in the story. And what a story it is. I can wait for the second installment of that campaign while smiling happily, knowing that it has a lot of potential, even, dare I say it? Even outgrowing some other sapce sims in ways of story telling and graphical quality. I know that it surpassed Dark Star One by far.

Oh, and I almost forgot...naming Alpha 2 and 3 (and 4 too, come to think of it). Giving them names and personality made me keep them alive throughout the whole campaign, even sticking them in the Escort list so I could hunt them down faster to protect them if somebody dared to look at them funnily.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
The first time i saw a Sath, the black dove/eagle nest pick up mission follow the nav-bouys was a personal fave. The first nebula mision and the First SOC loop. That third (or fourth?) mission with the GTVA task force parked abreast of the knossos was another one of my faves due to the whole we fear no Shivans feeling i got from it. Compared to FS1s "AIEEEE WE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!!!"
Campaigns I've added my distinctiveness to-

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
The Freespace 2 demo, 'Crisis in Capella'. Watching the Aeolus and Moloch dueling as bombs carved in towards the Argo transport was when I fell in love with Freespace.

Transcend, every time the Transcendent popped up. Terrifying and thrilling.

Blue Planet -- getting attached to Sam's wingmates, his father, even the ships in the lost fleet. And a bunch of other Blue Planet missions: 'Forced Entry', when the music kicked in. The mission where you face down an enemy juggernaught, when your squadron burns towards the target and the music kicks in. 'Universal Truth', because it has a sweet name and it's really cool. And the ending, of course, which got me really pumped for BP2.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
In the original "Playing Judas" gave me the creeps. Especially when your engine stop working you dodge frantically. Once I found out how that mission works in FRED it lost all its magic.

The ending of Derelict was great. With the last two missions oozing atmosphere.

Last shot Transcends "White Noise" was possibly the most epic FS moment with Blue Planet "Forced Entry" at a close second.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
The Narlyathotep waking up remains to this day the greatest "Oh FUC-" moment I can recall when playing FreeSpace, although I expect...something, from ST:R, to do similarly well in its final version.

For sheer awesomeness, watching the Transcendant's Pegasus tumble slowly past overhead as I pitch up in Transcend wins.

For sheer awe, though, that goes to the EASD Nemesis. (Though ST:R might once again mount a challenge when complete...)

And for outright badassery I'm going to disappoint everyone and nominate a mission of my own design as yet unreleased in which the GTFf Vandal takes on a complete Vasudan battlegroup in close combat.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
The SC Taranis being towed to Tombaugh station only to be destroyed by the newly-revealed SD Lucifer always gives me an "Oh, crap" feeling. Particularly because during my first play-through I was sincerely hoping that the capture of the Shivan cruiser would go somewhere...

Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

Hehe, I forgot about the first encounter with the "phantom ships" in BP. It was about 2 in the morning, that thing scared the bejesus out of me.

Now, it's time for me to play through Derelict and Transcend, this thread has sold me on both.

The warping Gany in MT-07 and MT-10.  For those of you that weren't around for that there was (and may still be) a bug that would cause the whole installation to warp out of the game.  Fun times.

Re: Those special FreeSpace moments...
I call it Nyarly. (Luficer -> Lucy...etc)
(And the correct spelling is Nyarlathotep)

But hmm...the best moment would have to have been when I got roasted by the SD Beleth's beam cannon after finally taking down all the beams on the Sathanas after fifteen tries. Oh wait, that moment sucked. I swore.

I liked 'Memento Mori' (Derelict), 'Nemesis' (Inferno R1), and 'Forced Entry' (BP)...uhh...that's all I recall at the moment.

I didn't like 'White Noise' even though it was, by a FREDding standpoint, pure awesomeness. Why? No shields = I DIE ****ING LOTS. I was on the verge of just hitting the "skip" button. (plus it crashed until someone else fixed it).

In game I wasn't awed that much (more panicked to gtfo than anything), but the cutscene was crazy.

Hmmn, 80 Juggernauts around the sun? What could they be doing? Sun tanning? Hmmn, nope, probably not. So, to answer your question, I expected a nova all the time, I just didn't know when it would happen so it wasn't really that much of a surprise.

When lightning falls is one of those special missions too. On the one hand, I really hate the damn thing because it's all kinds of annoying. On the other hand, when I first played through it I felt truly lost and helpless. It's one of the few that really conveys the atmosphere that was intended. Likewise of course, into the lion's den was another one which had a sense of awe. Dive dive was cool, but the mission as a whole was cooler.

Since people are mentioning other mods, I did like the dream sequence in BP. Until I found out it was only a dream. Then I was disappointed.
