Re: *drool* The Epic Journey BSG 4.5
I think what makes the Pegasus so dangerous is the fact it can lay the smack down before the Raiders even arrive within range of the Flak screen, Razor, to me, showed what happens if a BattleStar gets swamped under by Raiders, throw enough water at a rock, and the rock will crumble.

Vipers seems to be considerably better in combat than Raiders, Galactica's complement of old vipers can make a severe mess of a much larger group of Cylon fighters, though, in fairness, that's because if they didn't the series would have been a lot shorter.

I'd say that one on one, Colonial ships are significantly superior to their Cylon equivalents, but with the advantage of Resurrection ships and the ability to make new warriors 'out of the box', rather than having to train new recruits, it really boils down to a war of attrition, if the Colonials can find and hit the Resurrection ships, then they stand a chance, but if they don't they will, like the proverbial rock, end up being worn down.

Well, since the Colonials took out the Resurrection Hub thats not an issue - though the resurrection hub confused me.

It seems a bit stupid to have one ship like that for the ENTIRE cylon race. Surely there would be MAJOR resurrection facilities on the Cylon Homeworld.

Cylon organisation of resurrection craft seems rather odd.

of course this is assuming that the Cylon Homeworld and the Resurrection Hub aren't one and the same

Yeah, we don't know if there is even a Cylon homeworld. They may be completely spaceborne.

Vipers seems to be considerably better in combat than Raiders, Galactica's complement of old vipers can make a severe mess of a much larger group of Cylon fighters, though, in fairness, that's because if they didn't the series would have been a lot shorter.

Also because the Raiders have onboard FTL, which probably eats up some performance.

That's in the current timeline, I'm referring to a situation where the Colonials and Cylons met on equal terms.

Re: *drool* The Epic Journey BSG 4.5
Not sure about that, there's no clear evidence either way.

Scattered depicts Galactica's fighter screen as so leaky that a major target slips through along with plenty of conventional Cylon ordinance. There's not even discussion of firing on the base star.

Actually there is. Both the visuals used towards the end (three Vipers pursuing one Raider) and Viper pilot dialogue (one of them announces making a strafing run; Basestar is the only large target for that) suggests that they were running out of targets.

The Captain's Hand involves a battle at knife-fight range against an enemy made cautious by the lack of a Resurrection Ship.

See 33 for an example of standard Cylon range. The miniseries battle was long-range apparently. The knife-fight thing is deceptive, in fact; there are two rapid camera switches for Pegasus taking the nuke hit and the Basestar taking the hit from Pegasus' main battery that make them seem closer than then they are.  If anything, the battle was fought at a longer range then Cylons usually do, based on the visuals from the scene where Pegasus jumps.

The Cylon system is a good one, I don't disagree on that subject, but it's predicated on overwhelming the Colonials with targets and delievering a rapid knockout blow while they're still in task overload. It does not seem to stand up well to a pitched battle.

Try this one:

the Callymotxo!

So here’s how to make one:

1. Two parts tequila
2. One part triple-sec
3. One or two parts cranberry juice
4. Fill with Coca-Cola

alternative:

The PPC

You need for ALL variants Strohrum ( 80% ), as alternative Absinthe.

Here we go:

4 shots Strohrum/ Absinthe

and mix with ONE of the following:

Steiner variant:

2 shots crème de menthe

Davion variant:

2 shots Whiskey or Tequila

Kurita variant:

2 shots Sake

Liao variant:

2 shots plum wine

Marik variant:

2 shots Ouzo

Grab a seat and drink fast. After a few min the feeling on your tongue will reach your brain, so BE CAREFUL!!

It's probably better to drink that AFTER the show. :D

Re: *drool* The Epic Journey BSG 4.5
It does raise the question of how the Cylons would have fared had they not managed to infiltrate the colonies, from what I've seen, without that advantage the BattleStar fleet would have pretty much torn the Cylons to pieces, since a single Battlestar seems capable of engaging multiple Basestars without too much trouble, even the Galactica, an old vessel badly in need of repair and with limited fighter compliment was ok with tackling two of them at once, and two Battlestars were quite happy with jumping into the middle of a Cylon battlegroup and gutting it.

Basestars are not just battleships though, they seem to be more like a cross between a missile boat, a carrier, and a yaht. From what we've seen of the inside, the Cylons put a lot of effort making sure it was comfortable.

We also aren't entirely sure how many baseships the Cylons had in total, and if what we are seeing in the show is just an expeditionary force.

Who would that be? Kobol is the birthplace of Humanity, both the Cylons and the Humans lived there. Although the thirteenth tribe left a little earlier, as I recall... Although I might have forgotten something.

Oh well.

All will be revealed.

Yes, but that still leaves the question of who nuked Earth. That episode raised a lot more questions than it answered, like how the hell did the final five resurrect and end up who knows how many light years away? I'm still wondering about the details on Kobol.

Fankwankery about the effectiveness of Raiders one way or another is pretty pointless for now, but my gut feeling is that the raider/base ship teamup is very powerful -- much like today's carriers.

The Raiders lack of effectiveness can probably be explained just by its multi-role nature. It has 3 kinds of duty:

1.) scouting, since it has a built in long range FTL drive
2.) raiding, since it can carry many nuclear missiles that can put any unsuspecting ship in a world of hurt
3.) cannon fodder. If the battlestar's guns are focused on them then they can't block the basestars missile salvos as effectively.

Re: *drool* The Epic Journey BSG 4.5
Kosh is right, basestars are hardly full fledged warships. They have no point defenses, and no anti cap weapons outside of obscene numbers of nukes. Although to be fair, the lack of point defenses can probably be explained away by the fact that vipers do not seem very efficient with anything outside of dogfighting.

Battlestars can lay down a ton of flak, but their anti cap weapons seem a bit less effective than that of a basestar, but then basestars definately have weaker armor... Agh, this is hurting my brain.

Re: *drool* The Epic Journey BSG 4.5
It's also worth keeping in mind that the Cylons did use their ships for exploration during their unilateral cease fire, until they found new caprica. That leads me to believe that they never intended to go for a full head to head confrontation against the colonials besides the nuking of the colonies.

Gotta say, every time Zarek shows up my head hits the table. I hate that character and all his stupid, pointless, petty powermongering. And not even in a “love to hate” kind of way.

It feels like it would only take them two or three episodes to reveal everything in a good way, but they have to stretch it all out for ten.
