Re: Turambar, iamzack, Mononucleosis discussion grandslam finals
I already have my driver's license. Turning 18 means I can move out, buy a car, etc. Not that I can afford all that. But living in a cheap car is better than living here.

You say that now, but there is a reason why a large percentage of homeless people in developed countries have a diagnosable mental illness.

I've been staying out of this thread and watching it, but here's something you should consider (not that you'll likely pay any attention to it, but it's worth a shot):  Bipolar disorder is a terrible form of mental illness because people who have it tend to think there is absolutely nothing wrong with them and actively avoid taking medication for their disorder.  The most common complaint is that they lose the "high" - they feel slow, sluggish, and foggy.  And the reason people around you may say you're intolerable when not on your medication is that they see the manic, compulsive, and driven behaviour (which is, as a rule, without thought of long-term consequences) and they care enough about you to fear for your future if you continue along the same course.

I know it's probably difficult, but consider that maybe the people around you DO have your best interests at heart and consider listening to them.

I have several friends who have been diagnosed as bipolar and ALL of them say that their lives and their emotional stability improved dramatically once they started taking their prescribed medications regularly.

As for the rest of you giving advice willy-nilly:  You're doing more harm than good, so unless you know her personally or are advocating that she rely on interpersonal relationships or medical advice, my advice to you is simply to be quiet because most of you are just giving "advice" that will make matters worse.  This is a scenario where if you don't actually know what you're talking about you should, to put it in extremely blunt terms, STFU.

And this is my last attempt to instill some common sense in iamzack's threads.

Re: Turambar, iamzack, Mononucleosis discussion grandslam finals
Yeeeah... there's a difference between bipolar disorder and "bipolar disorder." The latter is the one they diagnose difficult teenagers with in mental hospitals. I've seen nine mental health professionals in the last ten years (six in the last year) and all of the sudden I'm bipolar? I was diagnosed because the doctor asked if I have "some good days and some bad days" and I said yeah. The next day, the docs gave me 1000mg of depakote. Oh yeah, trust the doctors. I am on so much **** right now I can't feel anything anymore, but if I miss meds, I get withdrawal.

And, I know it's difficult to imagine a teenager having legitimate complaints about her parents, but you should try and consider that no, most people here don't have my best interests at heart. Mummy needs me to be nice and agreeable at least until I leave so that I don't make her feel guilty anymore for being such a rotten parent, and my docs want her money. The end.

It's probably a combination of both. Family problems exacerbate depression or mental illness, and then mental illness exacerbates family problems.

I think MP-Ryan is right in saying that you should ignore most of the advice you get here, though.

Oh yeah, trust the doctors.
Of course, how could a doctor, who's studied medicine longer than you've been alive, possibly know more about mental illness than a girl with a high school education who drinks rubbing alcohol.

i think that that is a little on the non hinking side , yes the doctor has studied medicine but we are also talking about a system that the doctor works in , america has one of the highest percentages of young people medicated within the education system , why ? one because health care is not free or equal , and also it is so much cheaper for the state to do it this way in stead of using councelling , re-educating the parents on what is good(and safe alimentation) kids are pumped full of sugar and additives and then we complain when they are hyper.... so instead of changing what they eat we give them rivitril or some other **** to calm them down and with what amazing result , little zombies who grow up to be suicidal and even more unbalanced but hey at least they help keep the pharmacutical industry working ........

50% of the young ppl i worked with were classed as unstable or needing medication but after working with them and health workers a large majority of them ( through social education and health education ) were deemed as being normal and not needing medication , just a little tlc and respect and a lot of time.........;

Did you miss the 1000mg of depakote thing? Look it up, the maximum recommended dose is 750mg. And they started it with no build-up or anything. And then failed to recognize the "CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY" side effects listed all over the internets.

Just because somebody has a degree in it doesn't mean they know ****.

To me this sounds like the common case of teenager rebelling, so they're automatically marked with a mental illness until they get taken by the state, as a way of the ****ty parents "cleaning their hands" of their mistakes and hypocrisy. As I said--be a sweet good little girl until it makes your stomach turn. Then, move out. Get a job and save up. Hell--rent a place with some friends or whatever.

Re: Turambar, iamzack, Mononucleosis discussion grandslam finals
People, especially kids, are over-medicated around here, I'll grant you that. Then again, parents would much rather have a magic pill solve their problems than have the doctor tell them they're crappy parents.

Anyhow, I grow tired of the attitude that experts don't know anything, not just on HLP but everywhere. Yes, I realize that having a degree in something doesn't automatically make you God of that field. I realize that there are frauds, quacks, and phonies like our beloved Dr. Smart. However there are also plenty of people who have genuinely worked hard to get an education in medicine or science or IT or what-have-you, who actually know what they're talking about.

No, we shouldn't blindly trust experts, but thinking that they have no merit is what leads to people trying to cure cancer by waving amethyst around or pushing to have intelligent design taught in science class.

Unfortunately, even when experts know what they're doing, they still might not care to do what's right. Or not care enough to risk their paycheck.

Which is why you seek second and third opinions on that stuff, and do a little basic research, you know?

I mean, unless you're in a place where you *can't* get a second opinion or look anything up online, and your mother is too incompetent to do it for you.

One THOUSAND milligrams of Depakot?  While you're taking Zoloft (Sertraline)?  ****.  I'm surprised your brain hasn't turned into jell-o by now.

I was on 250mg of Depakot for seizures, and the doc had to take me off because it conflicted with Zoloft.  Depakot is NOT a drug that goes well with other psychoeffective medications.  Hell, it's dangerous enough when it's by itself.  If I were you, I'd ask for a different doctor.  Zoloft is a great medication to relieve anxiety and reduce depression, but it should NEVER be used with Depakot.  Even a person with schizoeffective disorder shouldn't have the kind of mix you have right now.  At the most, ANY person needs an anti-anxiety antidepressant, an antipsychotic, and a mood stabilizer.  And that's worst case scenario.

zoloft, depakote, trazodone, and vyvanse is what they had me on there, until they switched trazodone to benadril.

So much medication to go around it seems.  I know sometimes its unavoidable and I'm not surprised by the amount of TV ads the pharmaceuticals put out on the TV in the US but wow.

Anyone out there not on some sort of medication?  I have to take vitamins to solve a minor deficiency...but those are just vitamins.
