I think most of the people that didn't see the VBB days would possibly have read the Freespace/HLP story which had HFB as a trolling tool in it.

short answer: yes

long answer: they tried to make it look as though an0n hacked the forums and deleted whole boards but they forgot to make a backup before they did and lost like a month's worth of content.

Everyone thought it was pretty funny until we discovered the lack of backups.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

That's why it was so hilarious. Also, there were a lot of newbs that started brown-nosing an0n in hope of getting moderator powers under his new reign over HLP, which was equally hilarious.

It was actually a up-scaled version of something WildWolf did a few years prior to another Planet Freespace (I think, I am old and senile, and that was like 10 years ago).

Can someone please give us an overview of all the things listed in the poll? With links if you can get them.

Us newbies haven't experienced many of those classic moments (seems we've missed out on a lot), and some of them seem pretty interesting from the replies I've read.

There's 10 years of history behind some of them. The links could be challenging to aggregate :)

Easily was the best April Fools Day ever.

Even with the content loss. The hilarity made up for it. (As long as you weren't on any projects :p )
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

Uh, no.  We had up-to-the-minute backups; I quadruple- and quintuple-checked that with Styxx.  The problem was that Gamespy had a server issue which prevented us from actually running the forum restore function for a month.

Though I acknowledge it could have all been avoided if I had been smart enough to hide the forums instead of actually deleting them. :sigh:
