Just wondering, what 3d programs everyone uses around here to make your renders? I use 3d Studio Max R3. I've noticed alot of people seem to use Truespace around here correct?

I use Truespace [hence the reason im writing the COB to POF compiler first for PCS]

most people use TS becase it is relitively cheep, and it is the only program that we can use to make models for FS.

For renders? 3D Explorer, because I can't get cap-ship textures to work in Truespace... god konws I've tried but it never ever works for me. So I use 3D Explorer which is good but ships have to be rendered individually and then assembled as a whole to finish the pic, which slows thigns down a lot and often makes things look a little weird...

Trouble is, I don't have time to play around skinning the ships each time I want to make a picture (I dont have that much time you know  ) so I'll stick to 3DE for now, untill something better comes along...

actualy the proces takes about five minutes, I take  quite a bit longer becase I make a bunch of new textures for thingd

you just convert it with pof2cob open it change its scail to x/-20,y/20,z/20 rotate it by -90,-90,0 and then use the inspect (get texture) tool to get the texture from a poly go into the texture map selection box and uncheck the overlay box, then use the paint over tool to reaply the texture.

That's not how I did it before - I'll have to give it another shot.

I only know how to use 3D Studio Max. So, if I wanted to create a 3D model in it for use in FreeSpace 2, do I do it like this:

1.) Create it in 3D Studio Max
2.) Save as DXF format
3.) Open it up in 3D Explorer
4.) Save it as COB format
5.) Use a converter to save as POF format.
6.) Get soomeone to apply the skins for me.Because I don't know how to.

Right?

You have to create the image mapping (the UVW space etc.) in 3DS.

3D Exploration loads 3ds. You don't need to go over dxf (and you shouldn't do it cause dxf supports no textures).

I use anim8or and export the mesh to .3ds , load it in truespace texture it, try to get all the subobject stuff figured out (it's driving me seriously insane now) then convert to .pof... and even then that's only the start of me probs. Ah wells, I suppose I'll get it all figured eventually...
