Avatars for art gallery owners?
I think everyone having avatars would be a good sign- all us lazy bastards getting off our arses and earning our keep here.

Wait a minute.

Screw that. Anyway, I vote yes, because they're contributing a hell of a lot more than, say, the Node War people, and we actually can see the fruits of their labors before nobody can run FreeSpace because Windows becomes an obsolete OS.;)

That said, I'm biased because I've had a good long time to prep my stuff for when I can upload again, and it's ALL renders or movies, and I plan fully for it to get a gallery or something. I'd work on TAC, but frankly I think it died again with my computer.:D

On a side note, I think gallery ownership has become a bit... lax in the requirements. If someone can produce 3 renders that beat Steak's, they deserve their own gallery and avatar, and all the attendant glory. If someone produces 30 that look like ****, or they're just another person doing pencil-drawn work and scanning it without even bothering to clean it up in Photoshop (which is all right in some cases but is getting very tiresome, since it seems to account for about half now), they should be put on hold 'till they do something good. Basically, if it falls below the p1mp art line, it shouldn't go, regardless of whether the creator labels it "art" or not.

What he said. But if drawn art is good enough *visions of Deimos bridge comes to mind* then it should be able to get by w/o the cleaning stage.

Yeah- I never said THAT. Some things, like that anime-type Herc drawing and a few of the sketches, are good enough to be on the gallery. But many, I daresay most, of the stuff that's on there now is not. I have the decency not to start uploading MY concept art and calling it some thing of beauty that deserves a place up with the Havok renders. I imagine most do. But those with overinflated senses of their own drawing and rendering skills shouldn't be humored too much- I speak from personal experience in saying you'll never get better if you think you're good enough.

Yeah, that was bastardly and discredited my first post. So ignore this one if you like, I just wanted to say it.

I voted no, but it's sort of a conditional no. They should get one if, and only if, the staff decide that the quality is high enough to warrant an avatar.

The main reason to make their avatar-ness based on their number of renders? Because it encourages them to make more renders, of course! ;7  :p

If you knew how long it takes to do completely photoreal scenes then you'd place the required images at about...3?

seriously, everything i feel marginally proud of represents over 20+ hours of work.

Er... yeah. I'd think the concept of a numerical minimun kinda defeated the purpose of having galleries. After all, I can produce 2 dozen piece-of-**** renders on a good vacation week, or one really good one involving multiple render-quality models, etc.

How about this: if the staff has deemed an art collection worthy of a gallery at HLP, the creator of said art should have an avatar. Plain and simple. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
