SO not what it's all caught up to be (okay, so Century Battle 2 is the exception...). Focus on your smaller stuff, and put in detail like crazy. Now
that is what will make you a good render artist - the size can come later.

As for the problem you have, unfortunately since it is a pretty isolated example, I would have to take a look at it myself to see what you mean. But what I can offer you in terms of advice on this matter is to, wherever possible, keep all the elements of your renders seperate, for as long as you possibly can, while making your WIP. If you must blend something, save a backup copy, then blend and save as a new copy. That way, you can always shift things about or delete them with much more ease. Use colorise and overlay maps to your advantage - they are editable, removable, and best of all, do not compromise image quality. Oh, and
never underestimate the power of just a little blur. Never.
