I was asked this by an acquaitance...anyone else's thoughts?

no, because freelancer isn't ambitious.

No, but only because it's impossible to predict this (IMO) without having played the game. Freespace has an entire host of mods and so on, if Freelancer can't be modded it never stands a chance of replacing FS (and we'll have to wait untill something else with FS style gameplay comes along).

That said, it's down for Winter this year as a release.... guess we'll find out!

No. There are few games with THAT long production time (Freelancer has had, what, 5 release dates?), that come out being really good. The graphics are starting to show it's age, and... well, doesn't seem like its going to be something as good as they aim for.

Freespace is the arcade style space sim, and neitehr IWar 2 or Freelancer are purely point and shoot.

Yeah, that seems pretty messed up; I'm not sure how well the game would play with this system. From what I have heard so far, I am not really expecting this to be a Freespace-killer.
