just wondering what everyone has and what kinda score they are getting

at the mo i'm running athlon 1ghz 512mb ramm geforce 2 mx

and the last tiem i benchmarked it i got about 3700or something if i tweaked it i think i got abit more out of it

(now for the show off bit and now the real reason for this post)

today i just went in to twon as asked the place were i get my computer stuff to begin building my monster

dual Athlon 1800+
1024mb DDR ram
wait for it wait for it
GeForce 4 ti 4600

hehehe in 5 - 8 it should be ready for collection cause they need to order some bits in special - i was surprised i was going to buy the bits online but they were just as cheap infact slightly cheaper for somethings

cant wait to benchmark it

I'm gonna upgrade sometime soon. I'll wait a bit longer, though.

I'm not getting dual, though, but 1 Gb RAM sounds about right.:)

What?  MadNvidiot Geforce mark?!

pff. my machine spits about about 450 in that which goes to show what an utter pile of ****e it is.

KMN - dont get a Geforce TI (unless you're really into games and not into graphics).  I've built a large number of workstations for most of my Uni class and I have to say, the amount of graphical glitches you get with Geforces and Quadros is totally daft.  If you got the money to spare and dont game a huge amount, go the extra £500 for a decent pro card.  Window redraw errors and missing polygons just dont happen on Oxygen, Wildcat or FireGLs :)

good stuff (CHEAP too) here:

http://www.proe.co.uk/online/shop/graphics.php

wildcat 6110 for £1245?!  If my overdraft wasnt already nuked it would have been by now!

sadly i just banrupted myself getting this machine and the geforce i have hasn't been to bad so geforce 4 was the best i could afford and its still a  mean card admitbly better for games than graphics but i should do the job - i'm going to go back to 2d work maybe add some 38d stuff to it and do some design work this summer to pay for my machine if i earn enough i'll sell the geforce and buy something abit nastier hehehe like you i would love a wildcat but they are hordously priced

what other cards you recomend?

well.

My two Oxygen cards ive been extremely pleased with.

They're mostly rock solid (apart from an annoying video hardware overlay problem on glint R3 boards), very nice crisp image the whole time, easily on a par with Matrox cards IMO.  Their downside is they cost quite a bit plus they're slow compared to high-performance chips...the design is almost three years old now.

Wildcats kick arse as 3D cards.  I built a WC5000 machine and it was honestly the fastest thing i've ever seen.  The machine was incredibly responsive and it handled the old 5x200 segment sphere test like nobody's buisiness.  the WC5110 is basically to WC5000 on one board, the the 6xxx series have (slow) D3D plus are about 50% as fast again, even though ive never used one.  Wildcats arent so hot on 2D work however, while the image is almost up there with Oxygen Boards and Matrox boards its not quite as crisp and feels a little ropey.  Wildcat tech came from Intergraph corp.

ATI FireGL cards are meant to be very good even though they have no Geometry Processors (T&L) and therefore are better if you work low-poly openGL mode but like doing textured previews etc.

Nvidia cards.....are good for gamers but are quite blatantly high-performance toys pushed into the pro market, which is why i dun like them.  They get the job done fine most of the time (and pretty quickly too) but as far as precision work goes you just cant trust them.

Dont touch E&S cards as they cost a bomb and run at the speed of molasses.

Sun workstations come with a new crop of nice(ish) MAJC based workstation cards...but they only run under Solaris, not windows.

SGI proprietry chipsets are amazing but only run under IRIX.   The Cobalt one in the 330 and 550 visual workstations are pretty crap compared to 3Dlabs cards.

ATI Radeons...useless for pro work cause the drivers are unstable.

Matrox are excellent 2D cards and always have been.  If they actually work out what 3D is they might be onto a winner.

the University i'm at uses these in some of their *cough* "better" *cough* workstations.

When you maximise and then minimise a viewport....your model disappears until you move the camera around!!

The texture stretching is obscene and the number of hardware lights it handles are abysmal.

NO.  It's a terrible card in my exprience.

just remember to keep your old machine as a gaming rig -
the wildcat 5k series doesnt do direc3D at all.

try ebay....3DLabs wont let you upgrade it, but you can pick them up or even the older 4xxx series for as low as 200 quid.

Lets see...

8231! w00t! :D (3Dmark 2001) I have heard that it is somewhat partial to the Geforce cards though.

My current computer specs: (it's a bit old now but works pretty well)

1400MHz Athlon TB processor slightly overclocked to 1450MHz
ASUS A7M266E motherboard (AMD-761)
512MB DDR RAM (two 256 modules)
Geforce3 standard (non-Ti) overclocked to 250/575MHz
two 75GB IBM hard drives (7200rpm, ATA/100) running in a RAID configuration
Samsung 52X CD drive
Plextor 16/10/40X CD-RW drive
Creative SBLive XGamer soundcard (includes all the games :D)
some 3Com ethernet card
21" NEC monitor (1920x1440x32, .25dpi)
400W power unit
Koss SB40 headphones (much better than any speakers IMHO)
some 12 or so fans and AS2 thermal coating on the major components

I personally am much more into games than 3D graphics, so the Ti4600 would be a better choice for me, but I am sort of waiting on the next generation of GFs to come out since my current one seems to work pretty well. (that may change in June when UT2003 comes out though ;))

Nothing special here... P3-500, 384mb of ram, a Kyro2. I don't know whether it'd be worth taking a benchmark of this piece of junk. ;)

Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.
