Bill Gates should just give all of us enough money for each of us to have a supercool computer. I mean, he'd still have like $1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 left.
:D
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.

UNIIIIIIXXXXX!!!!! :D
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

Supercomputers are funny things.

For raw performance...i'd go for a 256 node compaq Alphaserver running 256 Alpha EV68 CPUs (thats 256x21264@800Mhz)

its a 64bit RISC processor that really kicks the pants off everything.

DDR basically uses a method of double-signalling per-clock to get the extra bandwidth over SDR.  This means that you get a kind of inductance occuring in the circuitry traces.  ECC memory introduces a 9th bit on the end of each 8 bit line that acts as a parity bit.  If it gets the wrong checksum the line is declared invalid and flushed...or something like that.

Registered just means the Memory stick has an IC that handles adressing instead of the northbridge/CPU.  You used to need it on servers to break the 1gb memory limit..or something like that.

Athlon MP board needs these two features cause they run 4 DIMM slots.  Asus 4-DIMM slot DDR boards also need ECC reg'd memory, otherwise you get bad reads and writes due to the back-EMF problem.

Darkage,

Consider getting an Adaptec 29160(n) SCSi160  card, I run one and its the bees knees.

Also for your SCSI drives, two 36gb MAxtor Atlas 10kIIIs would do you proud for OS and programs, and a western Digital caviar 2100Jb 120gb IDE drive for storage.

the 10k III go for about £150 each, the 29160 is about £270.
both of them are SCSI160 :D

Watercooling...uhm.  Just make sure its insured.  Failing that, get a vapochill ;)

Also consider a tyan Thunder if you want SCSI..since it comes with a DUAL CHANNEL SCSI160 controller inbuilt+AGP pro, 2 3com 100base net cards and some other server-type bells&whistles.

No DDR333 and not much OCing tho!

I'm thinking for buying a computer sometime near the end of this year but have not really decided on any particular specs yet; I plan to use it both for gaming and math stuff and have a budget of around $4000. Some new technologies will hopefully be out by that time. ;)

They had some of those supercomputers over at my dad's work; I tried running Mathematica 4.1 on them some time ago and it was amazingly fast; it could do every calculation almost instantaneously. ;) Too bad they probably cost millions of dollars... :p

New tech.

the only really new stuff will be AMDs Hammers, unless *ntel has an ace up its sleeve...which i dont think they have.

An 8-way sledge system...now THAT would be nice :)

naaa..

SGI NT workstations use intel processors and cant compete wit AMD MP platforms ;)

well...arguable the northwood xeons are faster but would you pay over four times the price for 10% higher performance?
