What is at the end of FS1's gauntlets? I can't recall whether they're in FSPort or not and I only remember a promise of something pretty in the briefing and being smacked by a Typhon(? - it was 8 years ago) on the last stage.

At the end there is a destroyer to kill, yes.
Though in FS2/FSport, you probably want to bring a bomber or a weapon with the "huge" flag cause otherwise you'll never kill it. (Well, I'm actually not sure if that is the case in FSPort, actually)...

They tell you how well you did and what your skill level is for the most part.

At least from what I remember from my last play-through, the Port team fixed things so that you can properly kill 2-kilometer-long ships with lasers again.

I've beaten the Shivan gauntlet in an Ursa before... it was a LONG time ago, and on a low difficulty. Basically, if you beat everything, the debriefing says you "rank among the best GTA pilots", or summat like that.

If you warp out too early they tell you that you're fresh from the academy or something

Hey, you know, they might just be looking for information regarding weaknesses in their own craft that you may have exploited (so R&D can keep that in mind when designing newer ships, etc). It doesn't necessarily mean that they suspect you of treason or anything!
