I'm no native English speaker, I've never understood the fun part of "even followed the directions". Does it means he had a user guide explaining how to set up a bomb somewhere ?

Apparently so, which I think is what most people find amusing about it. :p

Oh, and as far as applicability goes, "Avoid the beam and you won't get hit, pilot!"

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
I don't remember it word for word, but the part in "As Lightning Fall" where Snipes says  "now here's a lesson for you: SOC didn't rescue me because they liked me..."

I thought that pretty well summed up the SOC experience.
When the reactor explodes, it's usually a sign that you've taken too much damage.

It's probably a cultural thing.  In America, the stereotypical "hotshot pilot" or "awesome spy" will never need to read the instructions.  (Witness James Bond when he tosses the instruction manual in front of the car with automatic turrets, and the car shreds it.)  Sometimes movies will play with this trope, and will show the device malfunctioning or backfiring the first time it's used, requiring the hero to read the instructions before it will work.

In Snipes's case, this trope was played with still further.  The devices malfunctioned even though he followed the instructions. :)

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
There's some interesting outtakes/unused lines in "Into the Lion's Den", here's one nobody seems to know about:

Quote from: Snipes (outtake)
Evade, evade, evade! Get outta there, get outta there!

And some more unused lines, "Endgame" is the mission these are from:

Quote from: GTC Fortune (unused)
Hard to imagine it would all end like this...
Quote from: GTCv Monitor (unused)
Save the Iceni for me, I'll take Bosch down myself.
Quote from: Some Wingman (unused)
So where's the Iceni, command? Let's end this NOW!

Note, these are all from stu_fs2.vp, but don't have sexps/messages in the actual missions.

Also, Derelict is lame, FYI.

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
I've always enjoyed the many times where command tells you

"Ignore that last message!"

But, one I just recently came across

"If command wanted your opinion they'll promote you to Admiral. Now shut up and focus"
First mission in the Nebulae
"No"

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
I used to like that one.

Then I played the campaign on Insane mode and got sick of hearing that dialog over and over. Now I hate it.

Re: Favorite Quote in Freespace
in regards to the snipes directions quote, i think its funny because he followed the directions, the detonators should have worked. however, they didnt. irony 4tw!

and another good one that leaves a somewhat warm feeling in my belly:

Quote
I know why the Ancient ones were destroyed and I know what they knew. I know that if not for the Shivans, they would have perished long before. Without the Shivans, someone would have discovered the Ancients in their infancy, and eliminated them, just surely as they eliminated countless billions of others.

I believe it is only the destroyers who are killed. The Shivans are the great destroyers but they are also the great preservers. That is why when we moved into space there was no one powerful enough to kill us. Long had we been the destroyer. Our turn had nearly come.

In the Vasudan war, we learned how to adapt, we learned how to study our enemy, we learned how to overcome, we learned how to survive. And so we did.

All the jump points from Earth are gone. But the Shivans can rebuild them. I'm told we can expect them again, but not in my lifetime. Such is liberation

The entire opening cinematic is pretty awesome quote-wise IMO.
