Would you like to see a FS Source Code forum?

Hell yes! it\'s another part of FS modding after all!

No, this stuff can be posted in the modding forum if needed anyway.
5 (12.5%)
VW has a project on it - it\'d be better to keep source code things to there...
3 (7.5%)
It\'d be nice, but not essential.

It's simple enough, do people want one? If there's enough interest then we'll probably make one but if only a couple of people would make good use of it then we won't :)

Before choosing please bear in mind that Volition Watch is in the process of setting up a project of sorts (details - from what I can see - are hazy) regarding the source code. Any forum we setup here will have very little to do with that project (the only association being it'll be dedicated to source code stuff).

Thus any forum we have here would be for general stuff and a far better level of response would most likely be gained from posting stuff over on their source code project forum.

Don't quote me on any of this - just remember that they're actually doing something with this - we're just considering the idea of having a forum for the source code in general.

With this in mind - what say you? :)

I dunno. The general discussion of the source code IS in the VWBB. I mean, so far there isn't a single source-code related thread here (counting out the FSF threads), and VWBB has about 40 of them. Think about it.

Then again, its a new forum, so go 4 it.

There woulda been more but someone crippled the forums over the critical post-release hours.

well, if FSF turns into a patch project, well, that will be the place for source discussions I guess. make a forum, and gather both stuff together

I voted for the top one as i think it is wise to keep programming stuff and regual modding stuff seperated so programmers can easly pick out the desired topic and not having to search for it because all the other modding stuff is bumping it down the page as proberly the non progammers in the modding forum wouldn't give a damn  about the code;)

My 2 cents:)

I think source code forum should be kept at Volition Watch, IceFire has already said that there will be one soon. It's useless to have those forums scattered everywhere.

We need one, big, dedicated and professional team to handle source code projects.

This is something that shouldn't get to the point where we have countless of small or one-man teams hacking the code, it's fruitless in the end.

If you have the skills and want to modify the source, you should join the source code team, we need to keep this organized. Otherwise it will be hell.

Imagine the situation where you have countless of small mods, each containing very useful features, but all are incompatible with each other and there is no way you can add all the different mod's features to one mod, because you can't code, you don't have time for such "project".

I say: Source code forum should be at Volition Watch only, and there should be only ONE organized team handling it.

Of course that does not stop you from making your own experiments, but if you can, help the team.

Of course there is not YET a team, but eventually there will be. Many skillful coders will join that team, making future unofficial patches, enhancements and new features to our favorite old-time space simulator! Organization for such a team is already underway.

If you haven't yet, get yer arse here!

I have to agree. Volition themselves frequent the VWBB a lot now, and they will more than likely be asked for assistance.

I think YES! for all those ppl who are too lazy to leave here and post at the VWBB.

and BTW I'm gonna have a small (not 800x600) pic (not really a render although kinda) soon for the release of the source code. :)

I wouldn't mind one here simply because their scripts seem to have some really annoying bugs. Tried clicking on a Quote button to respond to someone's post in there and everytime I move the mouse over one of the code buttons I get script errors. And the No button (which doesn't seem to work) is almost perfectly placed so that a button is right under it. :) I'm also more used to checking HLP stuff then VWBB stuff 'cause HLP's E-mail notification actually works.

There's also the fact that now I can't get to VolitionWatch.com at all. (Error 500, Unknown Host)

Edit: Nevermind. It's back.

I believe it's in Profile > Options > Message & Notification... third option in that sublist.

AS soon as the source was released the first thing I thought about was 'how the hell do we control this monster?' 20 people all coding away on their own is a recipe for disaster. The more communication there is, the more can be achieved. Unfortunately I'm lost when it comes to figuring out how this can be done.

I can't post over there for some reason; it says that there is already a "CP5670" registered there. :p I might have registered some time way back in the past but I can't remember my password anymore, and I have changed email addresses several times since then. :p

This is the key to the whole thing. Unlike most aspects of modding - the source code is something that needs co-ordination in the community, and as Mr Fury said we can have 30 code monkeys rolling out top stuff but if they don't work together then it becomes impossible to use more than one or perhaps two aspects of the moded code at once.

This said, it's entirely possible to discuss the code and to work out how to do things for it seperatly from a large project - just because there is a large project doesn't mean a codding modder will want to be a part of it - perhaps he or she would just like to make their mod, get some advice on it or something similar without the code being assimilated into a larger (if better) project.

Thats essentially the core of what we have here - it looks like most people are in favour of a forum for it but - depending on what VW role out - nothing to do with the "bigger scheme".

Thats how I see this anyway, slap me if it's not this way :)

Thunder is very right.

We will have only ONE source code forum, Volition Watch and Hard Light Production admins should discuss about this, whether the forum will be at VWBB or here at HLP.

This is something so important that shouldn't be spread all over net, but instead one organized team, one or two forums (one for general source code discussion, one for the team discussion).

Co-operation is essential here, it does not matter if YOU want the forums to be at here or at VWBB, question is very much same if you prefer water over juice. Everyone have their own mind about things.

HLP's downtime came at bad time, because VWBB admins are already planning source code forum and it will be soon up if I am not mistaken, VWBB should have it then.

There's nothing bad in visiting both HLP and VWBB regularly, both have their own hosted projects which are all nice. If you are too lazy to visit two FS2 communities, then that's not others problem, you should visit both. HLP and VW are not rivaling for your favour, instead they are completing each other.

It is also much easier to keep source code discussion and the upcoming TEAM discussion at one place, also it seems that [V] staff are more regularly checking at VWBB than here.

Please, let's just use common sense. Spreading
