For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. Uninspired as of late. All I've done is build some rail further west and a couple offshore mines.

ran into a 1.3 update on http://www.mojang.com/ so decided to post it as a FYI to you all

Code: [Select]
Minecraft 1.3 Info + Snapshot w27
by Jens Bergensten on July 5, 2012
This week Dinnerbone (Nathan Adams) has arrived to the Mojang office in Stockholm. He’ll be working full-time on Minecraft here, and has already got a flying start! We managed to do a lot of fixing and tweaking for this week’s snapshot, and have finally decided to lock down on a proper release date for Minecraft 1.3: August 1, 2012.

A week prior to releasing, we’ll post a “release candidate” that is likely to be identical to the actual release. This version is intended to give server admins and modders a little more time to prepare for the new Minecraft version.

Minecraft 1.3 consists of a huge number of changes, and some of them are changes to the fundamental game engine. The most dramatic change is that we’ve kicked out single-player, and made it a shell on top of multi-player. There are two major benefits to this: first, it’s required for the modding api if we don’t want to have multiple implementations of every mod, and second, if we fix a bug in single-player, we know the bug is fixed in multi-player, too. Previously we had to fix bugs both in relation to single-player and multi-player.

Here’s a compact list of what the update will bring…

Minecraft 1.3: The Good

Lots and lots of bug fixes and new features. Players who mainly play in multi-player on servers should enjoy a smoother and more stable experience, as this has been our focus of the development. We’ve looked over the network packets and added encryption to prevent session stealing. Dinnerbone has updated the chatting screen, to allow for easier editing and clickable links.

The single/multi-player merge has added the possibility to share your single-player worlds with friends who are on the same local network. It has also enabled players to use multi-player-like commands in single-player (such as /gamemode and /give), but only if cheats are enabled.

We’ve added emeralds, emerald ore and a trading system that makes it possible to buy items from villagers. Villagers will add and remove items depending on what you buy.

We’ve added the possibility write in books and leave stories for other people.

We’ve added new terrain features, and you can choose to begin the game with a “bonus chest,” to get you started quicker.

We’ve added tripwire, so you can create new traps and contraptions.

We’ve also added new stairs, new half-slabs, cocoa plants and tweaked dispensers, leaves, cauldrons, levers, gravel, pressure plates, cookies, buckets, boats, minecarts, ice, furnaces… Plus you get magic orbs from mining and smelting (and not just killing monsters)!

Minecraft 1.3: The Bad

Since single-player has been turned into a shell on top of a background server, the game’s resource requirements have increased. When playing single-player, the game needs to be able to both simulate and emulate the world, which take many more CPU cycles. We’re working on optimizing rendering, but those improvements will not be included until Minecraft 1.4.

Minecraft 1.3: The Ugly

A couple of problems and expected features have been pushed to Minecraft 1.4. The most notable problem is the lighting issues causing black regions in the terrain. We’re looking into ways to solve this, but lighting is a very expensive calculation and we are struggling with finding a solution that doesn’t hurt framerate.

And the most notable missing feature is the modding API. Throwing out single-player was the first step in order to make the API possible, and that’s done now. We decided to release 1.3 without the API, because otherwise it would be an even longer wait for a Minecraft update.

We’ve also added an extremely basic version of “adventure mode.” We’ll work more on this in future updates.

To Summarize

The time between Minecraft 1.2.5 and 1.3 has been the longest update interval yet, and that was because we changed so much in the game engine. I (jeb_) was a little scared to push it to the public, but waiting even longer is not a solution.

If you want to get the whole Minecraft 1.3 change log, I suggest you read redstonehelper’s great summary here: http://www.reddit.com/r/edstonehelper/comments/p6lol/planned_for_the_next_update/
Snapshot 12w27a

Bug fixes!
Optimizations!
Please check your piston contraptions. Most we’ve tested still work fine, but some require changes to repeater delays and similar. Overall, pistons should have fewer bugs, but will appear to update slightly slower.

The Great and Beloved Emperor (may He be blessed forever) has - in his divine wisdom - ordered work to begin on a Collosum. This wonderfull new structure will entertain our citizens for yaars to come. Do note that it's location behind the mages guild has NOTHING to do with supplying it with monsters and failed experiments. Such rumors are HERESY!(tm) and will be dealth with by the inquisitors summarily.

In other news, with financing and help from the Imperial Engineering Crops, tommoex has fused his railway with the main railway from spawn (known as the Sandwiches unfinished rail). Furthemore, tunnels now connect Sandwiches station to our new customs station, enabling travelers to cross into our fabled kingdom without walking around the Great Wall.

That is all.

I won't be on for about 3 weeks as I'm out of town and my parent's comp runs it way too laggy.

Those 1.3 changes look somewhat interesting. Wonder what they mean by "tweak boats". Does this mean they don't explode so readily anymore?

I believe that, and you'll also be able to pick them up again, instead of always destroying the boat.

Alright, so here's what's happening.

New world once 1.3 comes out.

This world will be completely fresh, here's what's going to happen.
  • Fenris will be copied over and placed in the end
  • Everyone will be in survival mode, admins and mods will be free to change, but we shall no longer be giving out creative, the disparity has gotten rediculous
  • I will be offering admin rights to sandwich and Kyad, sandwich has been a HLP admin since the beginning (I think?)and has been one of the most active people on the server and Kyad already admins a much larger OCR server and knows what he's doing.
  • these admin rights will include full control over the server, the right to install plugins, restart the server and FTP access and whatnot.
  • I will not be looking for replacement admins if Kyad or sandwich feel that they don't have the time or otherwise do not accept the position
  • All current admins will remain admins, yes, I was trolling with the "mura is now an admin!" thing, but he's a cool dude and actually will get all the powers. (and the getting drunk with his wife in a hotel room thing was true too)
  • We may or may not be using warp plugins, this is yet to be decided.
  • I will not be copying over any other projects from the old server, Fenris is a special case, as it has been in construction for over a year, and has had work done to it by many, many members of the server.
  • What I will be doing is setting up a full copy, config files and all of the current server as a torrent. My VPS (currently hosting mumble) will be used as a seedbox. Direct downloads are out of the question, as the server totals several gigabytes.
  • If anyone wants to host the old world, feel free, the torrent will be a fully working copy of the server bar except for a working mysql configuration for logblock, as this will be used on the new world.
  • The new server will also come with slightly stricter rules which will be detailed in the following list.

New Rules

  • Don't be a dick (this applies to admins too, post in here if any **** goes down, I won't have discussions in private, things should be run openly)
  • Check with whoever is building nearby if it's okay to build near them, either on this thread or in game. (Looking at you Trashman, don't want any of that **** again) ):<
  • as an addition to this rule, if you don't want anyone building nearby, ask an admin about setting up a worldguard region.
  • Unless specified, (aka, freebuild areas) PLEASE keep to the building style of nearby things.  If you don't like the style, find somewhere else to build, you've got enough room. This was actually a rule on the original server, back in the days when it was hosted in a shoebox underneath rhx123's bed. (I'm not even joking, it was on a Intel Atom running windows XP with 512MB of ram and an ADSL internet connection) but pretty much went to **** straight away and that's how we ended up with the hodgepodge that is spawntown
  • Spawn will have a worldguard region, players will have to build further out

Any questions? I shall also be amending the original post
<Achillion> I mean, it's not like he's shoving the brain-goo in a usb slot and praying to kurzweil to bring the singularity

All cool with me qazwsx, 3 question for the time being
1. will you be building a "spawn town" in the reserved space?
2. will you be marking the edge of the protected space so we can find it easily?
3. will home warps still be available even if "landmark" warp locations are not?

I haven't been an admin on HLP since HLP's beginning, only sometime before September 2002. :nervous: Anyway, is it a technical possibility to export the Fenris to the End before it's been reached via stronghold portal? :-/

Might be an idea for Kyad and I to get on the new map to set some initial things up before it's made public. I'm thinking (especially if there's no warps) that outlines of a rail system would be good to have in place before things start getting built, as would a welcome center at spawn.

Ya, Rail system would be good.

MCEdit can drop the Fenris in the End (better idea anyway, WEing that many blocks sucks), the question becomes how do we get to it. Flight + ender eyes = easily found. Add in compass warps, easy to get to. After that, set a warp at Fenris and WorldGuard it. If warping is allowed, it won't matter, if it isnt, then only admins could anyway.

I might be able to host the old map when I move back into my cooperative, but unless I can convince all of my fellow coopers to shell out for a better internet connection I doubt anyone will be wanting to play on it. Regardless, I'm looking forward to a clean slate. Anyone interested in helping me make a proper tiered city?
