Author Topic: Extreme Forum Lags, am I the only one ? (Read 10499 times)

Since two days I'm having some extrem forum lags. Not always, but each fourth or fifth forum access can take between 30 and 60 seconds. It started the day when Fury changed something to the DNS/URL stuff or whatever, I don't know the technical details.

It's happening since I lost my FTP access.

Am I the only one having that problem ? Maybe it's browser related, but I don't use any cache, sooooo.....

Any ideas ?

I always have lags on main site. Not as big as yours and I can browse site fine, but it's still a problem. I think it's browser related.

Already suggested once to try another DNS server. Either Google's or OpenDNS. Google provides good instructions how to change it: http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

If you want to try OpenDNS, just follow same instructions but use the IP-addresses found in the very bottom right corner of http://www.opendns.com/ If changing DNS server doesn't solve the problem, then it is not a DNS problem but something else.

Yes, my FTP is working again, thanks to your instructions. But honestly, I'm little confused why I should now suddenly start to change my DNS server entries in my router or network settings, when they worked for years and are still working perfectly, with just one exception, and that's this site, and that only after you or someone else changes something a few days back.

I'm not so good in technical stuff, and I don't want to mess something up. If this problem is really just my, then it's really my own problem and I have to think about something, but still I thought it wouldn't hurt asking, maybe I'm not alone and there is a error in the forum page.

But you have nothing to lose. Just go to your network settings, and where it talks about DNS addresses, instead of "Fetch DNS server address automatically", select "Use the following DNS server address" and then enter any of the options. Google DNS was 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, if I'm not mistaken. Then just apply the changes and see if things work better. If things won't work better, or actually work worse, just go back and reselect "Fetch DNS server address automatically". Simple.

I ran it today and 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 is correct

I wonder if you're just running into a particular banner ad on certain occasions. I know there are some obnoxious Flash-based ads out there that lag the hell out of my machine.

I have an adblock running, an embedded tool inside firefox. I doubt that's the problem. I will try the different DNS entries, but actually I'm a little annoyed if I have to change working settings just because of one page

I've found that it frequently gets stuck asking for something from cdn.jquerytools.com. No idea what it's asking for from there though.

Does that mean you experience same slow pageloads as Starman? I find it quite odd why it would be limited to only two people.

I've found that on a few occasions, especially when I open multiple tabs, HLP will sit and fail to open the pages completely or endlessly load them. If however I click stop and reload, all the other tabs suddenly load. Last couple of times it happened I read where it was getting hung up and it was the same place both times.

However I usually don't have this problem. It's very sporadic.

I have entered 8.8.8.8 as my new gateway (though I'm not sure if it was the right spot, because there is my WLAN Router too, and I haven't changed that one).

The problem is still there, and still random. Sometimes it happens less often, other times more often It's hard to say in the link list what the browser is doing, mostly it says "connecting with hard-light.net". Then, when connection is finally established, the links change quickly, but I cannot read it.

Just ones I was able to read, that is was trying to connect to "ajax.cloudfare.com"

I have disabled two javascript and one SSE related CF settings. I dunno how quickly they'll take effect, but I'd guess in 30-60 minutes or so. Please observe how the site works.

Edit: Also, gateway is different than DNS server. A gateway in home network is essentially your own router, so changing gateway should in most cases render your network connection inoperable. But if it is indeed working, you're not using this connection or you didn't actually change gateway address but something else.

Sorry, I used the wrong term. I changed the DNS entry in my TCP/IP Settings in windows to 8.8.8.8.

Still laging I'm afraid. I will delete all browser cookies again, maybe that helps.

For whatever reason apache just acted up causing 100% CPU usage, so I took it down for a few minutes for some diagnosing. While doing so, I noticed that the server was unable to resolve any hostnames, but IP-addresses worked fine. Seems like DNS servers provided by hosting company weren't responding, so I changed those to OpenDNS servers instead.

I wonder how long they've been unresponsive and whether this had anything to do with the problems Starman01 has experiencing. Starman01, please give an update on site loading times.

will do, but doesn't look good so far. Just let me "normal work" a few times. I changed my DNS settings back for the test, deleting cookies and cache didn't helped yesterday

If problem continues, please follow instructions below.

- Install Firefox (if you don't have it already), Firebug and YSlow addons. Then use YSlow addon to provide information from when page loading is slow.
- Repeat above step, but use Page Speed instead of YSlow. http://code.google.com/speed/page-speed/download.html
- Please run following commands in Windows command prompt and provide the output in copy&paste.
