Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
Meh, ban iamzack, leave #hard-light.  Where else are we going to have excellent discussions about all manner of stuff that isn't freespace?  Discussing physics/chemistry/aviation/abstract mathematics is awesome in there.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
I vote for leave it be. But, recommending a channel name adjustment. Currently it's called #hard-light. Why not #hard-light-lounge, or #hard-light-bar or whatever to better fit what actually goes on in there.

Personally, i'm a fan of #hard-light-padded-cell. Not for what goes on in #hard-light of course (i just like the name). This probably wont happen though.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
For those who don't go on IRC, there are a number of IRC channels for the people of Hard Light to go to.

#hard-light, started off as a FreeSpace centric place, but as more people joined it more or less became the General Discussion of HLP IRC
#freespace, started recently for people who wanted a FreeSpace only channel where they could just talk about mods or the game without seeing any drama
#scp, talking with coders or debugging

Plus project specific channels like #scp-fsu, #bp, #diaspora etc etc

The solution isn't another channel. We have enough.

Just leave it alone.  It's not hurting anybody.

Though +1 for banning iamzack.

Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
i usually go to #hard-light to talk freespace. usually modding scripting or coding. but i go there and its a a wall of drama and flames. sometimes there is some actual tech talk and that is ok. but i dont like that all the real talent has walled themselves off into their own channels for whatever campaign they are working on at the time. so i have to be in 4 different channels and hope they aren't all full of drama queens. so yea, a big fat no drama rule at the top of the channel would really be something i would like. in general hlp is the place i go to to get away from drama and focus on buisness as usual, and iamzack kinda threw a monkey wrench into that. i wouldn't ban her outright, i would just enforce a no drama policy. its a rule that there is no way in hell she is even capable of following, so she would be permabanned in no time.

i always approve of the nuking of things and people.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
The only reason people aren't talking about that is because they aren't talking about it.

Humans will talk about human matters at some point, the chatroom isn't a conference room for only proffesional work, it's a place for social interaction unless moderated in a different way, which it hadn't been.

If people want to talk about freespace, physics, modding, whatever, just do it.... nothing and nobody is stopping you from doing so, is not like multiple conversations can't be done.

While I agree in general, this particular social interaction has gotten disruptive.

Ofcourse another channel isn't the solution, what could be the solution is instead make another tab up at the top of the site like #hard-light already has, for those who actually seek the focused discussion about freespace or similar.

See we're at this point where #hard-light IS the de-facto GD for the HLP community, and there's no reason to ban anyone for something that could count as "general discussion".

This whole thing is also really stupid and silly, because I'm pretty sure none of us other than |REDACTED| and |REDACTED| know both sides of the story. Some of us might say we do but that's really just picking sides cause we like one person more than the other.

I say those people actively seeking out to ban |REDACTED| should man-up and approach |REDACTED| themselves and sort the issue out.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
There will always be camgirls and dramawhores, the solution is to simply move good, solid, technical stuff to their own channels, and abandon #hard-light as a place to get work done.

I could see the names getting switched around, much as it has with the forums.

Sure, but imagine logging on to General Discussion and having 65% of the threads be posts by the same person about the same topic (my life is terrible, my ex is an awful person, I am depressed, I have no friends, people don't trust me). That's not cool bro

These are real issues that absolutely deserve weight and compassion, but ultimately we've got to be even-handed about running the channel.

Course it's not cool, but don't you think someone's repeating it cause no one is replying? It's the literal cry for help and someone atleast has to respond, else you will get this sort of repetition.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
Yep, I totally agree, but a public IRC channel about a ten year old video game is not the place, sorry.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
To be fair, I think it lost that notion when the actual channel of #freespace was created

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
Even so, there are plenty of other topics being drowned out by psychological assistance for a member of the community who is a member mainly for psychological assistance, and while tolerance of the symptoms of depression is laudable, it can't come at the expense of public function.

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
Not denying that. I'm just saying maybe someone should respond to those pleas so the rest of the channel can function as it should?

Re: #hard-light: do we nuke it from orbit?
I never post in general discussion and this might be a mistake:
The thing that is weird about IAZ, is that she has absolutely no interest in freespace whatsoever. I understand general discussion does not have to be about freespace, but why is she so invested in a community which exists for something she cares nothing about?

She floods the channel with tales of her woes, the same exact things mind you.
1. Boyfriend/relationship
2. Drinking/parties/getting lost
3. Random spam for kicks
Begging for discourse or attention or I don't know what exactly.

She sounds like she needs something to do like a hobby or something. I would advise freespace but...

I used to pay attention to the general chat, but I don't really anymore. I just go right to #freespace or #bp and start talking about modding. That #freespace channel was such a great idea.

I say ban her for a month and see what happens, for her own good really to raise awareness. It should not be a big deal if it's only for a set amount of time.
