I've made a FRED mission with NukeBomb's ship pack and everytime I go to play it FS kicks me out to windows. It doesn't even start to load, I select the mission, hit enter, and bam! I'm at my desktop

I made another mission still using ships from the mod and it works fine.

The first mission was rather large though.

Any ideas why this would happen?

Any error messages?

What are the specs of your computer?

Whats the nature of the mission? It could be you've got to many ships in there or some other error that means it simply won't play. Try playing another mission - something from the FS2 campaign so that you know it works. See what happens, if it works then you'll know the problems with the mission or the ships used in it.

Nope, no messages.

Specs: HP pavilion 6535; 466MHz Celeron, 64 Meg ram, Integrated Direct AGP 11Megs(shared with RAM:rolleyes: ) 40X 20-10-40 Yamaha CD-R; SBlaster clone for sound.

POS I know:rolleyes:

The Mission:

Starts out with 3 Deimos taking down a Demon, they warp out when Demon dies; Ravana warps in being followed by a Hecate with 2 Sobek escorts; They kill Ravana and warp out; a minute or so later a Sathanas jumps in, a few secs. later a Colosus with 2 Ragnarok escorts (frome NukeBomb's mod)  jump in and fight the Sath. Also, there is Alpha wing and two wings of enemy fighters with two backup wings. I also have The Baylon Project music pack installed.

I've made other missions using the same ships minus the big ones, and they work just great, no problems at all.

The mission that gives me the problem won't even start to load. I selelct the mission, press commit, and after a few seconds of watching the computers HD light blink I'm back at my desktop:mad:

Hmm, it certainly sounds like your trying to push the engine to hard in relation to your computer. Make a back up of the mission and try taking parts out of it (the enemy fighters for example) or something, play around with it and see what you can do to get it working. FS2 traditionally doesn't like having to many polys (thats ships) in the game at once.

That was the problem alright....the thing is though, I've made huge battles before though, hell the one that gave me the problem was a small one:eek:  whatever though, maybe I'll be able to do something to get it how I want it.

Thanks for your help though, even if the answer was a simple one.

That's ok - it's a fairly known problem with the engine anyway, means people have to be inventive with their missions ;) Anyhow, good luck in the future!

Thankyou:)

BTW, are there any FRED tutorials besides the one that came with it? I need something to explain some advanced event scripting if I'm ever gonna make a mission that's more than Beam-Free-All and 'attack this ship'.

If not, well I guess I can play around and see how many errors FRED can give me in one sitting:D

Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

Yes, a Battle of Endor type mission, I've seen several posts talking about them and tried to make one.

Got any pointers?

No, huge battles suck.  The worst first missions are ones that have massive amounts of ships in them.  By best and pretty much all of the really good missions I've played are small.  My first mission was two cruisers duking it out and two wings of fighters.  I worked my way up from there, adding two more cruisers, some bombers, and some more fighters.  Try that, try some waypoints, and then work your way up.

To make a really sucessful BoE mission takes ALOT of experience, paitence, and thought to pull off.

The practice I shall! Maybe on eday I'll have a campaigne that's nothing BUT BOE missions:p :D

Seriously though, I do like seeing lots of ships duke it out. I live for the big fleet battles. But you're right, they're not always fun. So I made a small one. I sent Alpha and Beta to take out two Aeolous cruisers....Fun:D

My first mission....
You had to disarm a pre-disabled FS1 Leviathan in Apollos while being shot at by a few Hercs and Ulys. Then the transport jumps in and docks with the cruiser to repair it. Meanwhile, a group of Shivan fighters and bombers guarding a cargo depot 5-10 KM away decides you need to be rubbed out. You just keep the Leviathan alive until it jumps out....
That reminds me, I was putting that into FS2....

Well, since the problem seems to have been solved, lets make a "first mission" thread!

My first "mission" was a pitiful attempt at having the Sathanas and Colossus duke it out, wondering why their beams wouldn't fire.

A final completed mission was a raid on Shivan remnants.

There are some problems with the goals, but it is a first mission.

My first mission was created to test nebula effects when I was doing Ikeya Productions - It involved an Orion and a wing of Erinyes (Alpha wing) flying through a nebula, a Demon jumps in and engages the Orion. That's pretty much it - I just wanted an impressive firework display on which to test nebula ;)
