Can you outline what you're looking for in a console? I mean - you might be looking for childish games - at which the Game Cube excels (although it's not all that way - Rogue Leader and Super Smash Brothers are amazing pieces of software). The X-Box obviously has Halo but I'm not sure what else... Halo kinda eclipses any news about other X-Box titles (at least as far as those of us who don't look go). And the PS2 seems to be a pleasent mix of the two... MGS2 and GTA3 both being selling points as well as its DVD functionality.

So without you outlining what you want in a console it's totally impossible to say which is better, remember your buying a console for its games more than anything else - not for anything else it can do like a PC can).

What I'm looking for are basically some childish games (for my kid brother, he's gonna want to play it, too :(, he's 10), and some mid-range games, like Halo, but all I've seen so far is Halo, Halo, Halo. Plus there seems to be more games for PS2. But I'm also looking for graphics, which X-box excels at, but basically some fun-to-play boredom-busters, for when I get bored of the computer. As well as some relative longetivity of the games.

And out of interest - what's wrong with the Game Cube? Seems a perfectly good console from what I've seen of it (though more angled to kids games than anything more substantial).

From what you say though - the PS2 might be the best bet (plus it's got a built in DVD player...)

Becuase it's basically a kiddie console, it doesn't have as good graphics, and you need to pay extra for a DVD player (granted, so does the X-Box)
Plus you need a seperate memory stick for both it and the PS2. That's another point for the X-Box, though. IT comes with a built-in 20 gig hard drive.
Boy this is tough to decide!

Crap...crap?!  Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, Devil May Cry...have you played any of these games?!  Do your homework before bashing another system.  Also...DOA3?  Heh, PS2 is getting a revamped version later on this year.  And we already have VF4 to hold us off, along with the upcoming Tekken4, Soul Calibur2, and MK5.  Munch's Odyessey...ech..I'll take Jak and Daxter any day over that game.  Granted it isn't incredibly horrible...I just think it could've done better.

Okay..enough of that rant.  I'd go with the PS2.  It already has a great library of games and it's also backwards-compatible, meaning you can also play virtually every (some games aren't compatible, though it's only about a dozen.  Not bad considering the hundreds that were produced.) PS1 on the system with no extra hardware (though you will need a PS1 memory card to save the data).  The X-Box is alright...but aside from Halo, it doesn't have much going for it.  And I'll be damned if it doesn't have the worst video game controler ever created.

dont buy a console because it has DVD... external DVD Players are now like 80 bucks (and smaller too). xbox has Halo, which gets really boring after a while (Instead try Tribes 2... if your system can handle it), and Dead or Alive 3... kinda sucky fighting game... but if you like to jack off while you play... this is your game.

Gamecube... if you liked the N64... you'll realise this system has potential... not all the games are "kiddie" games thou.

PS2: welll... IMO Metal Gear Solid isn't that great of a game, and GTA3 is on the PC now... so no point (expecially if you have a PS1)

Ill just stick with my kickass pc system.

Depends, if you want a console that's friggin' the size of a small house, then get Xbox!  The controllers you have to be a basketball player to have hands big enough to hold them!

(i mean, you can always play halo ;) )

and if you want a console that plays DVDs, then get a ps2 :) lol
(MGS2)

i've got a ps2, but my neighbor has an xbox, which i don't like

Ok, so that's three for the PS2, 3 for the XBox, and two completely unrelated vouchers for the PC:D.
The reason I'm getting a console is because I need the quick-fix action games that it provides. Granted, PC games are better in every respect, but all the games I have require some serious time to play. I have Mech3, HW, Freespace 2, and Empire Earth, all of which I've beaten at least 3 times, and I want to try something different besides the usual PC fair. Plus consoles have more games for the Space-sim genre, as on the PC, that has almost completely died out. :(

As an avid console gamer I'm shocked by your limited view of possibly the best platform available. Before you automatically dismiss this as a rant by a nintendo flunky I'll clearly state that I have thoroughly put all of the so called next gen consoles through their paces and am basing my conclusion on both game quality and asthetic quality of the console experience.

PS2 is the 'cool' console. It has an astounding library of software available including all of the games that worked on the PSone, unfortunately as anyone who owns a PS2 will tell you the vast majority of games available for it are really bad. This is partially due to games companies cashing in on old licences by making sequels.
There are obvious exceptions such as the sublime MGS and MGS2, Silent hill and for the demolition fans GTA3 but most of the other popular games available are niche games. The Final fantasy series for instance is quite aggrivating if you don't like turn based strategy. You may actually have a hard time finding games that you actually want to play.

Xbox I have to say is one of the most overhyped dissapointments since 'The phantom menace'. Before I start I'll say one thing in it's favor.
Halo absolutely rocks. It really is an excellent gaming experience.
Now onto the dissing unfortunately. Let's start with one of the most annoying aspects of the console, the controller. It looks like it was designed by a guy who really likes burgers; big burgers. It has aproximately the shape and volume of the ideal 'big mac', no, not that flimsy thing we get here in europe. That cow in a sandwich monster that makes one in three americans unhealtily overweight. The buttons are too small, too close together and the analogue stick was placed in exactly the wrong position. It reeks of cheap materials and bad design. It was built to look good and even there it fails miserably.
Next we have the console. It pushes around more polys per second than any other machine. Fact. Well woop de doo to the world, it looks really nifty but sadly the games available to show off the mighty graphics are so ordinary you forget that you're playing a game and simply notice how much work some art guy in Tecmo put into the characters and backgrounds in DOA3.
Xbox relys on hype to fool the masses into believing that it's the best do you see many exciting Xbox games on the horizon? I don't. So much potential so few results.

Lastly we have nintendo's machine. If it truely is gay then you can paint me bright pink (or any of the other available colors). This machine proves that some research and development departments do actually deserve the cash they're being paid.
"It's really small so it has to be underpowered" you cry! Well it is true that it pushes less polys per second than both Microsoft and Sony's machines but it applies more effects to those polys than either of the other two machines so you generally get more atmosphere in the games. The controller is simply sublime, it's one of the most impressive pieces of ergonomics I've ever witnessed.
Isn't it strange that nintendo can release their machine at a significantly lower price than any other console? It should be apparant that both Microsoft and Sony rely on the machine's price as an important source of profit. Nintendo by comparison are so convinced that gamers will enjoy the available software and buy lots of it that they can afford to launch the machine at a much lower price.
Play Supermonkeyball and tell me that you're not enjoying yourself despite the fact that it has extremely childish artwork.
This machine was built by gamers for gamers. Ignore it and you could wonder what you're missing when you see everyone else having a great time.

Really, we are getting very personally defensive about our consoles now, aren't we? ;)

I'll come out and admit it: I have an XBox, and the only game I own is Halo. It's a fantastic game, IMO, but I can't see a great deal that's currently available for the machine that will get me buying. However, I think that criticism of the control is unfair. I've always found the PS2 controller incredibly difficult to use to the extent that I'm really, really terrible at PS2 games. However, the XBox controller feels a lot better. No pain, even. :)

However, you should pay attention to a couple of words and phrases in that paragraph in particular: IMO and I think. That's a personal opinion, and I don't think for things like controllers you'll be able to take someone else's comments as gospel. Since they're fairly easy to try out at stores (at least around here) why not try that first?

As far as games and so on go, you can take other people's opinions a little more safely. Personally I don't think any game on the XBox is particularly outstanding other than Halo, though I hear good things about Jet Set Radio Future. The PS2 has a larger crop of good games, but it's been around for longer so that's to be expected. There are still a lot of games coming out though, so don't let that put you off - the graphics aren't too bad either.

Looking to the future, I'd personally say XBox - but then I would, wouldn't I? :p There are plenty of good-looking games coming out for it, to refute Meg:

Timesplitters 2
Unreal Championship
Deus Ex 2
Mechassault
James Bond: Nightfire

Oh yeah, and there's the prospect of a Halo 2 which will apparently add bots and a map editor (plus other things, but it's a ways off yet).

Anyway - take your time, try out your friends' consoles if possible first too. That's how I got hold of an XBox *remembers playing Halo on launch day...*

Enjoy. :)

Eh, I'd get all three of them if they were being sold around here... as it is, though, I had to get Shrike to smuggle me a PS2 when he came over (import taxes are absurdly high). What I can say, though, is that it was well worth the price - I only have three games up to now, but all of them are amazing (GTA3, FFX and GT3), and damn fun to play. I didn't have a DVD player either, so it was a bonus to have it built in on the console.

Now, can't say much about the others - never used them, and I can't find them around here, except for a single store that's charging something like triple the original price or something. Ah well.
Probably away. Contact through email.

Well its something we can agree on, XboX will have the best in the longer run as Doom 3 might be comming out for it.
