Technically, the X-box is better - slightly.  But the Gc is very close (especially if you don't have an HDTV, which X-box games support - which impacts pixel fill rates or whatheve the hell the tech name is).

I have a PS2 (or rather, my borther has, but e's moving out), and I've tried both the X-box and GC.  So far, the Gamecube is the only console I've instantly picked up and had fun with..... plus, both the Ps2 and X-box controller are (IMO) utter crap.

I'm going to buy a GC (if I raise the cash), because it's better value and i have doubts over whether Microsoft can really sustain the X-box with it's fairly appalling  record outside America, especially in Japan.

The Ps2 isn;t a bad buy, though - it's got lots of quality games.  so far,m I've only seen Halo as a game I'd buy for the X-box, but I'd buy Rouge Squadron, Mario Sunshine, etc when they come out.

Personally I don't think any game on the XBox is particularly outstanding other than Halo, though I hear good things about Jet Set Radio Future. The PS2 has a larger crop of good games, but it's been around for longer so that's to be expected. There are still a lot of games coming out though, so don't let that put you off - the graphics aren't too bad either.

Looking to the future, I'd personally say XBox - but then I would, wouldn't I? :p There are plenty of good-looking games coming out for it, to refute Meg:

Timesplitters 2
Unreal Championship
Deus Ex 2
Mechassault
James Bond: Nightfire

Oh yeah, and there's the prospect of a Halo 2 which will apparently add bots and a map editor (plus other things, but it's a ways off yet).

Anyway - take your time, try out your friends' consoles if possible first too. That's how I got hold of an XBox *remembers playing Halo on launch day...*

Enjoy. :)

I will only say that my post was simply pointing out that GC is a viable platform, it has advantages over PS2 and Xbox. I am in no way saying that you can't have a great gaming experience on PS2 or Xbox (I've played MGS2 and Halo and loved both of them).

Just incase you think I'm basing my judgement on only these two games I've also played:

XBOX-

DOA3
Project Gotham

PS2-

Silent hill 2
GTA3
Wipeout fusion
Gauntlet
Tekken Tag
Onimusha

GAMECUBE-

Rouge Leader
Monkeyball
Luigi's mansion
International superstar soccer 2
Super Smash Bros. Melee

As for Unreal and Deus Ex2. I wouldn't play them on Xbox, for mods alone I'd get the PC versions. As for the Bond game, if it is as good as it can be (from E3 reports) it will simply be Halo in a different package, not ideal if you own Halo but pretty darn great if you get the GC version :D
Mechassault I haven't seen yet but Timesplitters2 might be good, the PSone version was a few hours of fun.

Gamecube currently has the most potential and is the most fun in my opinion.
Of course you're totally right Kellan, anyone who's going to buy a console should give each of them a thoroughly good testing, that's how I chose GC. :)

And the verdict:  10/10 for accuracy; 10/10 for description, and 10/10 for illustrating how pathetic anything to do with Xbox really is!

And, may I add, at a significantly smaller console size!

What is wrong with the gamecube? I personally think that it is the best of the bunch. What makes a console good is the games available. Most of the games for the PS2 and Xbox are just ports for goodness sakes. They aren't original. Also, take a look at the controllers. The X-box one is one of the most clunky ones ever. It is nowhere near as good as the gamecube's.

Go GameCube!

Maeg: I'm certainly going to be getting UT 2003 for the PC simply because it's out on that first. However, it is a slightly different game to Unreal Championship on the XBox (ie. it has vehicles and so on) - but probably not different enough to justify spending so much money on. :D

The other games I will take as they come. I'd love DX on my computer if it will run the damn thing... :o

However, with games like that, you're finally seeing a bunch of games coming out for the XBox that aren't ports, so you get improving graphics and so on. I know that they're avilable for the PC, and that a lot of PC games are being ported, like Medal of Honor - but consider this: if you're not a big computer expert, you may not have the high-spec computer that these games demand. In addition, you might not want to go fiddling around with installers and modding (:ha: MOH) and so on. This is where a console always comes in, so I don't see the problem with offering high-quality ports - they let more people play a good game.

Besides, it's console games that'll eventually pay for things like FS3. You don't think Halo would've sold a million units if it needed a 1.4Ghz PC to run, do you?

Besides, lots of nice ports coming my way...I think MGS Substance and MGS3 are coming out on the XBox. As Zeronet says, Doom 3 might be coming too - and even now my computer won't run that. :D

Besides, I always bought an XBox knowing that if I got bored, it was full of expensive computer stuff that I could (I hope) nick out of it - a better 3D card than I have, some RAM, a 20GB hard drive...and so on. Cannibalization rules! :p

Unfortunately, I don't think you'd be able to rip the parts off the mainboard on that thing... Never really opened one up, so I can't be sure, but it's unlikely that they built it with slots and cards... ;)

If you insist on buying a console:

X-Box - Only has Halo and Fusion Frenzy. All other games are crap.
PS2 - Gameplay is somewhat lacking. Wipeout Fusion kicks ass but other than that........
GameCube - Super Monkey Ball, Rogue Leader, Pikmin. It has tons of uber-gameplay games. They've almost finished Resident Evil and it looks pant stainingly good.

In short. Buy an X-Box if you're only gonna play Halo, otherwise get a GameCube. And get a GBA too.

GameCube.

I'd say PS2 is a good bet too, though, since there's CD and DVD functionality. There's also a MASSIVE library of PS1 and 2 games to pick from, so you're bound to find at least a dozen games you like.

And one more thing: try researching, typing, organizing, and presenting a school project on the X-Box. Or visiting HLP on a Playstation. Or making new player skins on the Nintendo. A PC is the most versitile; if you're worried about cost, just buy a new video card every 3 years and a new processor every 5. I've had my system since 1998 and it runs FS2, D3, Q3A, RTCW, and JK2 with my upgrades easily. (Okay, it chokes on volumetric shadows. But it's not bad!)

Yeah GBA really is a great little machine. I've started playing Zelda - a link to the past for the first time. It was written in 1993 if I remember correctly. It really kicks ass :)

Castelvania was good, bomberman kicks ass (especially with friends) and there are a lot of excellent original gameboy games available too.

If need be, I'm gonna sell my kidneys to buy Wipeout for the GBA when they finish that BlueRoses thingy.

Bah!!! With games like Metroid Prime and Zelda coming out for gamecube will win the long run.  Metroid has superior graphics to really anything i've seen on x-box... even though Zelda is cel-shaded, it's still gonna be one heck of a game...  Gamecubes games right now already are the best... Smash, Pikmin (addicting), Rogue Leader, Monkey Ball, etc...

Oh, BTW... GO GAMECUBE!!!:D

lol, it looks like most people's advice is to get a GameCube :D  X-box is just too overhyped.... I mean take a look at the sales... In Japan, even the PS1 is outselling the X-Box :D

Bah. If I bought a console, I'd get an Xbox. Sure, the GC has very original and inovative games, but I just don't like that kind of "bright colours, happy happy&joy joy"-games. Right now, all Xbox has is Halo, but I believe it's going to change.

PS2... well, sucks
