I hate these kinds of threads
...but suffice to say, they have to be made sometimes, because you guys should know what's going on with your fellow members.

Basically, I just finished my first quarter of college, managing to tough it out with a 3.5 GPA at the end.  (Yay for that.)  That said, that's really the only good thing about things right now.

I just made it home, and while performing routine maintenance on my gaming PC which hadn't been touched since I left for school, I found that it won't boot.  Nothing.  No fans spinning up (but the lights on the motherboard are functional).  There's a high pitched noise coming from the case somewhere.  The problem exists either in the motherboard or the power supply, and I honestly can't tell which.  I'll have to take it up to the nearest repair shop to get it taken care of, because I don't have the equipment to test the problem or narrow it down myself.  A little bummed about that, suffice to say, but I also don't have the time to deal with the problem right now, as I just returned home from school.

In addition to that, after arriving home as late as I did, I didn't manage to make it over to my girlfriend of over a year's house, because of my parents not wanting me out late.  ("It's a school night for her!" etc.) She's a little irritated about this, and thus, not exactly keen on talking to me on the phone right now.  A little bummed about that, but that's still not what's got me down the most.  I love her, and I know we'll sort this out easily tomorrow.  Not a major problem.

The main problem is that I may have developed a condition called heart arrhythmia, which is essentially where the heartbeat goes out of sync at relatively unpredictable intervals (as for what it feels like, it's as if the top half of my heart is contracting at a rate asynchronous to the bottom half, and each of these palpitations lasts a few seconds each).  This is accompanied by occasional chest pain or discomfort consistent with the palpitations.  According to multiple google searches on my part to find the source of the problem, heightened stress (check), caffeine intake (check--finals week just ended, so lots of late nights), exhaustion (check--see aforementioned reason), lack of food (check on some occasions), and dehydration (check on some occasions) can be causes.  If they happen a lot, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, and I'll have to consult a doctor about it.  Since it didn't crop up until recently, I'm not sure if it's just due to my... turbulent life situation right now of transitioning from home to college and back again, but it could be something else, and there's a slim (but existant) chance that it could be something more serious.  This frightens me quite a bit, needless to say.

It could be a number of things, but it didn't start happening until the first day I started using a bicycle to transport myself more quickly around campus, and when I returned home, after resting for an hour or two (too tired to really drink anything) on the computer, I felt a strange sensation in my chest that felt as if my heart was seizing up at a rate somewhat consistent with my normal heartbeat--if anything, it was like suddenly becoming aware of your heartbeat as if someone were squeezing it within your chest at the rate it normally pumps.  Hard to describe, but it scared the **** out of me, because I had never felt it before.  It's done this occasionally ever since (albeit not nearly as intense), triggered occasionally by drinking coffee, anxiety, lack of sleep, and hunger.

Basically, I'm scared I might have a heart conditions (and they run in the family, btw), and I'm scheduling an appointment tomorrow (technically today since its 1 AM) to have it checked and diagnosed.

Also, I just came out of finals week at school, which means I'm currently very, very tired after working my ass off to keep my grades where they need to be.

Anyways, I feel like this should shed some light on why I've been either nonexistant on the forums or short-fused or just downright stupid.  I'll keep you guys updated, and I'm so sorry.

I don't think not caring about your heart condition will help it at all

I can't really offer more than a 'hang in there, big man'. Hope your heart conditions sorts itself out and everything gets back on track. Congrats on your GPA too, from a fellow brother on finals.

try a different psu. ive had several of these kinda problems over the years and it was always the psu. that high pitch whine is likely a dead capacitor.

Re: I hate these kinds of threads
Both my dad and I have mild heart arrhythmia.  Good news is that it is fairly common and usually not a severe condition, plus there are several possible treatments.  Visiting the doctor should be helpful.  In the meantime try not to worry about it too much if you can help it. :)

Hope things improve for you soon, keep us posted.

I meant taking things little more lightly, a heart condition is obviously something serious so he should care about that.

I'm with nuke and wat (and Rodo in a better worded sense).
It sounds like a PSU Capacitor to me.

Your potential heart problem could be temporary and not serious.
Temporary and serious.
Permanent and not serious.
Permanent and serious.
Until you find out with some tests, there is nothing you can really do except for cut your caffeine intake and up your water intake, so you shouldn't stress yourself out over it.

About cycling; just because the symptoms occurred after this doesn't mean you should stop! Perhaps take it a little easier on the bike, and make 100% sure you drink afterwards (easiest way to make sure this happens is just to leave a bottle of water next to the computer at all times - trust me, you will drink from it, and trust me, most of the time it wont require concious effort - especially after a while).

Honestly, this might sound 'worse' to you, but drop the caffeine for chocolate if you feel you NEED a stimulant, and if you can, go cold turkey, after a month or so you will realise you don't actually need the coffee at all a chocolate bar a day will probably be enough of a reward, and you'd be surprised about the difference in health it makes (caffeine vs chocolate), you should also probably make sure you don't slip on to the energy drinks in place of coffee.
You don't NEED those substances, you just feel like you do because you're addicted, as most people are, it's not an overly dangerous compound but if you're concerned it may be attributing to your symptoms, and it's the one thing you can immediately change for effect, it makes sense to do it, right?

Just focus on the things that you can do, and don't stress (as best possible) about the things that you can't.

Just adding to the chorus- Hang in there.

And get that arrhythmia checked. I'm sure doing so is high on your list, but get it checked.

Re: I hate these kinds of threads
Scheduled the appointment today, they told me to be in the ward at 10:30 Monday morning.  Just have to tough it out until then.

Bruised my sternum a bit today, but that was due to a play-fight the ladyfriend and I got into (as I tried to seek playful vengeance against her sneezing on me).  This amounts to a bit of pain in the chest area, but in related news, no really major palpitations today.

I'm 95% the PSU problem is, in fact, the PSU.  The motherboard appears to be receiving power (the internal LEDs for the hardware power switch and reset switch light up just fine), but again, it'll require further testing.  Stuck on the MacBook for now, so no gaming for me.

Re: I hate these kinds of threads
Hope you'll be alright, seems these days everyone has to be more and more careful about avoiding stress, eating and living healthy. Take it easy and whatever the outcome, don't let it limit yourself too much, especially not let it get you down. Positive thinking can help a lot in recovering or battling illnesses or other problems as well as finding things like good vitamin supplements and fresh air from nearby forests at dawn and dusk for the best oxygen intake and relaxation so the body has all the 'tools' to recover from or lessen the effects of anything that ails you.

Also, agreed on the PSU being the potential issue for the PC not working, here's to hoping that fixes the PC.

Re: I hate these kinds of threads
I get the feeling man, I had a passing out spell and am going into the cardiologist myself on the 3rd of December. Main difference is that with me they are pretty sure it's a temporary issue, but they have to follow procedure, which involves sending off a notice to the MTO that will likely get my licence suspended in 4-6 weeks if I haven't been checked out and cleared to drive by then. And I graduate this semester. So I'm also in job search mode and NEED to drive due to where I'm living at the moment.

Only thing I can tell you is much what everyone else is saying. Cut back the caffeine, and try not to let it get to you. I know not having much control over the situation or knowledge of what's happening is frustrating, but there's not much you can do but deal with things as they happen - and worrying only adds to the stress levels and makes the situation worse. I know, I'm a worrywart myself  :p

Edit: Unless you see blown caps on the motherboard, my money is on the PSU as well. If you have a spare PSU lying around it couldn't hurt to see if it'll boot with that, as a PSU installed yourself is a whole lot cheaper than paying someone else to check and install one for you.
