Here's what Gearbox can do, right now, no creativity required:

Step 1. Port 1, Cata, 2 to modern systems, release on Steam
Step 2. Make high-poly models of everything in the Homeworld games. Make flashy new visual and sound effects. Update the UI to modern functional standards, at least what we had in HW2.
Step 3. Release Homeworld 1(2), Homeworld: Cataclysm(2), and Homeworld 2(2).
Step 4. Mad profit!

Would you spend money on those games? I sure would.

How long do you think it would take a team that has successfully built 3+ entire, functional games and corresponding weapons, characters, and blasted landscapes, to re-do about 100 models and as many effects?

 Given the fecestrom () in their forums, the best move they could do right now is making the HW2 engine Open Source, that could calm down the community a lot. I doubt they have the code, however.

That'd be nice. But if they're even remotely considering anything like my plan, it likely won't happen.

 On topic: It seems Gearbox got everything that Relic had HW related once they lost the rights, this includes the engine source code. So there is a very slight possibility of a "Homeworld Open."

Port ? They already work natively. So I guess half of step one is already done. Good job Gearbox, that was helluva quick.

On a bit more of a positive note after my original bout of depression, I will admit Gearbox is a great studio...when they really try. I loved both of the Borderlands games, thought they were well done, as well as OpFor. Additionally, if Gearbox wants to make an effort to at least make the HW games more stable on modern systems, more power to them, certainly no complaints here. I can't even play Cata right now because it simply hates my guts I guess. If they want to update them graphically in some form, even better.

What does concern me, though, is if/when Gearbox chooses to undertake a new HW title, is their workload at the time. They've demonstrated a lot of attention to detail and care put into their main titles, keyword being "main".
