It could use some work... it looks... toony compared to the rest of the shot. It needs more detail or something.

I don't see an issue with his Mars.  It looks like Mars after all.

It looks like Mars

...

if Mars was in the vicinity of some massive gravity well that distorts all the light.

Actually, the image itself might be passable. It actually looks like the crappiness that happens when you set #divisions to a non-one number.

But yeah grab yourself a BP skybox once WiH is released, BP skyboxes are always made of win

I thought more divisions was supposed to = better proportions?

No man, the more divisions, the more distorted it gets, that's as far as I recall.

It was implemented to play around with for nebula bitmaps, I think.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Yes, it's not a good idea to use those divisions to modify the looks of a planet bitmap, you can play safely with the size modifier but up to certain point you get distortion as well.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
Divisions keep the same proportions and all, but they distort the planet. They are useful for nebula stuff though, sort of...

I noticed this around the 8x8-9x9 point.

Re: A celebration of FreeSpace
At a point, you need to start making the y much larger than the x dimension as well. For instance, I've got a 11x15 planet in a mission IIRC. Either way divisions = bad.

I see somebody's putting the BP debris scripts to good use.

My understanding is it's all going in the MediaVPs pretty soon.
