I've considered using a subtle animation (only a few frames, and probably a 512x512 image overlayed on the 2048x2048 one to save space) to create a flowing effect in the trail of matter between the two suns, but I'm not sure whether it would justify using an animated effect and whether animated background bitmaps are even possible in FSO.

I don't know the answer to that question about whether it's possible, but my first impulses when seeing it were that it was very pretty, but lamenting that it wouldn't be animated. I'd love to see it animated.

It is possible, BtRL used it on the asteroids background, but it's hard as hell to get something to look good.

I remember that but that was a static texture on a rotating cylinder in the skybox IIRC (They could have used an animated texture anyway since a skybox is a model, but that would have been too much cost for too little benefit).

I'll experiment with it tomorrow and see what I can come up with (I'm not on my FS PC atm).

I don't think you should stress about it too much - iirc when we were doing research for the accretion disk in Tenebra we decided that any motion would be invisible to the naked eye. But maybe I am misremembering!
