Well, I'm back. Seems the place is still standing.... good! What've I been up to? Well some highlights...

Driving. I've been lazy and not bothered with getting my lisence but dad was ok with me driving the hire car around some of the quieter places... managed not to stall or crash which is nice to go.

The marine world park... lots of dolphins, sea-lions and seals which made for a brilliant day - all the animals were really friendly and such which was pretty cool.

Absynthe. Illegal in the UK (at least not available in shops) but I found many a bottle in Portugal. Also, Jack Daniels is depresingly cheap out there compared to UK prices (about £12 as opposed to £17).

Weather. It rained the first week but cleared up for some really great sun. I is tanned, a'ight?

A curiously large number of pretty girls for this time of year (during school terms) but who cares. I'll say no more about this ;)

Lots of trips and stuff, everyone in Portugal is really friendly... the food is good and the sights are fun.

Now then.

What's been going on around here, and indeed all around the world? I gather HL2 has been pushed back after the source code got ripped but that's about it. Fill me in on the highlights of it all please!

To be accurate, there's now a Beta of the game itself floating about because someone else did a job on getting the models, etc.  And so its pushed back till 2004 (hey look at it this way - more cool stuff will be added)

Well, the world ended when Shrike marched the forumites against this huge beast made of myst and fire. However, being the saviour of mankind that I am, I took parts of Shrike's corpse and reformed the cosmos. From his bones came the earth, from his eyes the sky and from his blood the oceans. But the Gods of old were not so forthcoming with the power and the inhabitants of the Earth fell from grace amidst a flurry of beaurocracy. And strangely enough everything came to be exactly as it was before the apocalypse. The only difference being that Pi is no longer exactly 4 and SAAB never ran for 15 seasons. The reason for these differences is beyond me.

You're the non-sentient, decaying flesh that forms the fabric of the cosmos. You don't get a say in the history of the universe.

It's not being reset. It's being Xerox'd and the original destroyed.

But, like the Asgard genome, eventually all the copying will introduce subtle errors and flaws that accumulate until the universe is nothing more than a big ol' pile of incoherant mush.

Basically, it starts as B5, gets screwed with all the copying of energy, matter and plots and comes out as Sunset Beach.

Ah. Good. Because DC screws up when they do universe resets, and fail to remove discontinuities :p

This was the version of SAAB that didn't have marines by day and fighter pilots by night?

Or am I getting this mixed up with that other space opera, BMW...

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
