Hullo all,

The time has come to replace my mobile phone.. and my god. The selection is startling and to be honest I don't think I could care less about half the features they come with these days... games, java applications, polyphonic ring tones - they're all surplus to what I use a phone for - phoning people and texting people.

Now, the point of this thread is not to say how much you hate mobile phones - so please refrain from that. The point is, I want a good quality phone, suitable for use all over the globe (tri-band is therefore essential) but also not pathetically small or breakable. Applications aren't exactly important but speed and ease of use is. A good, sharp, color screen would also be nice (the Nokia 3100 springs to mind here, as it's very bright and crisp).

In short I'm aiming more at a business/office/executive level phone over a little toy to take clubbing with me and my "bling bling" mates (none of my mates are "bling" in any way, but you see what I mean).

This information in mind, please recommend! Don't worry about pricing and what have you for the time being... just let me know what could be suitable.

Thanks! :D

I got a Nokia 3510i - little bastard it is, but it does the job. Me mate's got a Sagem something-or-other - it's got colour screen, all the usual junk, and a camera. Cost him about £60, and that was months ago. It's good as well - wish I hadn't spent a ton on mine...

I know precisely Jack about mobile phones, so I'll let someone who cares give you proper advice. :)

I'm waiting for the Nokia 6820, until then I'm not worried about changing what I've got.

Phoning and texting are soooo easy on something like that.

I harbour an eternal hatred of Nokia phones. Devilish things.

Myself, I have a Sony-Ericsson T610. Proper job. It's small, the structure of it is brushed aluminium, it has a camera, it has bluetooth, it has IR (I used to think this was standard, until my friend got a very recent phone that didn't have it. Weird), it has GSM and GPRS, and it's triband. It has a lovely large colour screen which actually looks half decent, and the battery lasts for an age. Only problem is it takes a short while to start up fully, but it really doesn't make that much difference.

For phoning it does a great job, despite the microphone being nowhere near your mouth (disadvantage of the small size, I suppose). For texting it's also great, the keys have good tactile feedback and it supports T9 predictive. It does have a few games, and fully supports Java (not a Nokia bodge job with the compatibility), but it definitely screams 'executive' more than 'teenager'.

Hmm, for now I've only been looking at Nokias (since they're so widely available and what have you). But the Sony phones do seem a lot more "classy". Size is fairly important though... to small and the phone runs the risk of looking like something some 17 year old girl would carry around some club, flashing about in an attempt to look classy - shortly before standing around smoking to get the same effect ;)

Anyone else have any input?

Thing is, while the T610 is actually physically small, its design infers that it is actually larger than it is. Looking at it sitting on my desk, it doesn't look at all like some small 'classy-fashionable' gimmick. People always object when I say it's probably smaller than theirs, until a side-by-side comparison is conducted.

I have a habit of subconsciously picking things out that look larger than they are, my handheld is the same. Weird.

I got a Seimens C60, colour, seems ok. Don't know whether its tri-band or anything. I think it might be, its not small, not big. Does the works, good phone imo, not expensive or anything.

I've got a Samsung T100 that I was thinking of selling pretty cheap if you were interested.

here in AMERICA, the phone you get depends on which service providor you use.  For example, some of the main ones here are Verizon wirelss, Cingular, Sprint, etc.

If you want a particular phone, you're usually limited to one or two services that support it

I hate cellphones. I'd not carry one if it wasn't for my parent's making me. (I got lost one time and wound up 110 miles somewhere accross the hudson river...)

But it's small, and pre-paid, so I don't have any bills to worry about. It's the Virgin Mobil Vox something or other...

I have a phone mainly because texting is the accepted medium among my peers, and I have to either join the trend or be even more outcast. I have a recent phone because I want it to last and fit in as small a pocket as possible. I have a cameraphone because it makes my life easier than carrying around a pencam or keyringcam as well for quick snaps.

That's it. If it were up to me, I'd just carry an SLR camera everywhere, screw contact with the world.

I want rid of my phone to be honest, costs too much and just pisses me off more than half the time, I won't miss it.

I wasn't talking about how I hate them, I just don't want one anymore.

Yes i got a Motorola i90c for Nextel service. Service may be $50 a month for any half decent plan but its gota cool walkie-talkie thing that goes coast to coast in 0.5 seconds. THe phone is durable, ive dropped it on concrete from stairs a few times, its got few java apps just like you want, but the color version, the i95cl is like $150-$200 i think. If you have money to burn or its good for your business then this is a good choice IMO.

FYI, i HATE Nokia phones more than anything... they should all be burning in hell.

First of all: MobileBurn. Now.

Second, I have a Sony Ericcson T68i, and am quite pleased with it. And the price - 'specially on eBay - can't be beat.

Personally - I don't know why - I dislike Nokia phones, sometimes with a passion. Of course, the stupid retarded numbers-only naming system might have something to do with it. Freaking idiotic marketing.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
