I remember there was a big hooa about D4 awhile ago. Apparantly, [V] started work on it, but it got canned, so some fans tried to take over. Never worked out.
I remember because they even posted a recruitment thing here on HLP sometime back.

You know, this is what Interplay deserves for chasing away two of their best developers (Bioware and Volition) and destroying another (Black Isle).

'Descent sequels', hmm D4

Would be good but UTs right that recruitment thing turned out bad, and V is now a 'console developer only'. Pity, would've been good to see a 4th in the Descent Series even a Fs2 Sequel could have made it through  (Notice how I didn't say Fs3 :p)

Remember that since Freespace is officially known as Descent: Freespace, the hinted-at Descent sequel could in fact be a continuation of the FS story.  Unlikely, perhaps, but it's not out of the realm of plausability here.  I really don't think it's the case, as Descent is much more widely-known (if older) franchise, but the utter secrecy/stupidity of Interplay on the subject sort of makes one wonder.

Man, I seriously hope that the rights to FS go up for grabs. I would put a huge chunk of my money to that.

I pose this question to you all, once you had the rights to the game what would u do? and what happened if one person around here owned the rights? They would have total control of what happens to the game.

Even with their finances in the gutter, I doubt they're going to be selling it off for cheap, if at all. Even it it was a small amount, say 10,000, it would still be next to impossible for the community to purchase. Not to get anyone's hopes down or anything, but even with the rights, a game costs many millions to finance. And THQ is even more of a "quick, bad console crap" company than Interplay has become...

but there is hope. every gamer out there would support FS3, and I know of no one who has not given it very high praise. So the demand is quite clearly there. And besides, Volition's relathionship with THQ isn't set in stone, there are many gamer-friendly publshers out there (Activision UBIsoft etc) that could pick up the license and at the same time get V to develop a new game.

[V] started work on it, then they felt that the game they were making wasn't really Descent anymore at about the same time they left Interplay for THQ and Red Faction was born.

Fans picked up Descent 4 with Interplay's permission and even the support from the people at Outrage, but due to the agreement that Volition was to make the next Descent sequel the project was dropped due to Interplay not wanting to risk a lawsuit with Volition over the development rights.

So there's quite a few Descent community people who aren't too pleased with Volition due to turning Descent 4 into Red Faction, as well as blaming them for killing the community Descent 4 project.

One thing is that if Volition/THQ does purchase the rights and develops FS3 it's most likely going to be a console title based on some of their more recent (past year or so) comments.

You're missing the point Rictor. Once we own the rights there is nothing to stop us putting it up on Gamespy with FS2_Open 3.6. Can you imagine the number of new members we could get if we did that? Kazan's PXO replacement would be full of people playing every night and we'd have tonnes of talent people playing the game for the first time and falling in love with it :D

We could always make a special avatar for anyone who contributed so as to pursuade people to cough up a little ;)

Anyway we're getting ahead of ourselves here. We don't know if the rights are going to be available yet or if another publisher will simply snap up everything in a package deal so I'll confine myself to laughing at how Interplay have dug a deep hole for themselves and hopefully will now see it collapse in on them :D

you know the cheapest it could be would probly be somewere in the $10,000 range, probly more in the $100,000+ range, if it were $10,000 maybe we could have a hope of a dream of getting everyone together across the world to pony up, but if some big company sees it we're toast.

I don't know about that Bob. The recievers may simply sell everything off to the highest bidder. I doubt they'll have a set price.

I doubt nobody'd be willing to pay $50,000 for the rights to any game, even one that barely broke even.
