Is the planet a 3d model?
Or a special bitmap with debris add-on?
Is it targetable by other craft than VPK
or is it up to mission designers to set it up correctly?

Mars is a 6000km wide model.

The mission was a pain in the ass to set up. I had to place Mars 5000km away from the planet killer in order for it to look right scale wise. The VPK then refused to fire at the planet even though it was facing it and had a beam weapon with a range of 10000km. Turns out the VPK wouldn't actually fire at anythign more than 50km away from it. So I stuck a target 50km in front of it's gun which it fires through. I believe the beam hits the planet but I wouldn't bet money on it. Unless it was someone else's money. The planet had to be set with the kamikazi flag to make it explode nicely. Otherwise it took so long to explode that I got bored and quit the mission.

I bet (someone else's money) that it would have been more realistic though.

You used the fire-beam SEXP?

That didn't persuade the VPK to fire at the planet 5000km away from it. It just ignored the SEXP. On the other hand when I stuck the target 50km away in front of it, it fired at the target without prompting.

The planet was 50k km away, it is also 6k wide model. That's only tiny distance from the 60km distance limit.

You sure the planet was less than 60km away from the center of the mission (player starting point)?.
