The view is supposed to be an exaggerated view from a star in a satellite galaxy ie. Magellenic Cloud, thus there is a star there, and it isn't intergalactic void!

No that's the old model, the one from the Awesome Computer Challenge, if you remember that.
of course, since that model broke a number of engine limitations it had to be stripped down a bit but it works. Basically had to get rid of all the insane detail and go back to the fairly low-poly main mesh etc.
