I read a forum where someone said that. And then an expert in compression formats came along and completely shot it down. :D

Don't know whether or not to believe it now :D

[color=66ff00]Unpacking is only a valid idea if you're blessed with a boat-load of RAM.

Create a new text file, copy and paste the following into it:

seta com_allowConsole 1
com_showFPS 1
cm_backFaceCull 1
r_orderIndexes 1
r_usePortals 1
r_useOptimizedShadows 1
r_useShadowCulling 0
r_useTurboShadow 0
g_projectileLights 1
g_showPlayerShadow 0
g_skipViewEffects 1
image_usePrecompressedTextures 1
s_clipVolumes 1

Then save it as AutoExec.cfg and copy it into your Doom3\base\ directory. Voila, should get a major boost in fps.

Also you can turn ON vsync, the engine's capped at 60FPS anyhow.

Are you using an nVidia card or A Radeon?

Uuh... wow.. :eek2: That tweak along with downloading the the ati radeon beta 4.9 drivers allows me to play it at 1024x768 with ultra detail and going at 50-60 fps. Crazy.
I have returned... Again...

[color=66ff00]If you're using a radeon then you can take advantage of the radeon specific texture manipulation code:

File

Could give you a nice boost, performance seems to be varied though so it might not do a lot at all. Gave me about 5-6 FPS boost which is a Godsend in firefights.

Well, it works pretty well on my 5600, though it needs tweaking, but I'm enjoying myself too much. I played Doom on a 386 with a 256 colour VGA card, so I'm not too fussed ;)

The game itself is great, keeps a good feel of the original even though it's been revamped, barrels are still your bestest friend. And I still hate revenants :) Even the textures are similar in style and colour, and it's still just as infuriating when you can't find the key (or PDA in this case) :(

I miss the double barreled shotgun though, and I haven't encountered a Mega-Health yet, but then, I'm not even out of the UAC complex yet, and I think you will descend into Hell as per the original.

Whats your highest score in Super Turbo Turkey Puncher?  Go to the lounge to play it. By the way, I'm halfway through the game on nightmare.

[color=66ff00]I keep forgetting one simple principle: I'm not playing HalfLife and thus crouching whilst moving around does not make me harder to detect. :o

As such I've had my ass kicked a few times.

How'd you get a 512mb Vram card? :p

No no, seriously, there's a lot of forums that have some GOOD suggestions on tweaks and stuff that will make it run better for the ATI flavor of videocards.

Neowin.net's suggestions

Doing these changes, plus Maeglamor's attachment above, gains a lot of performance back.
The only thing that unpacking will do is possibly increase performance whenever a file is queried.  Basically whenever a sound file needs to be played that hasnt been cached yet, will take a short split second more to be transfered from the  compressed format to the swapfile.  it aint much but it can make things feel "smoother"  It wont help with FPS.

That's kinda the point in some places - running ultra detail generally means a lot of skipping as new files are queried that haven't been cached. Unpacking everything means that you won't get those skips - it's not about FPS but it generally means the same thing.... a smoother game (the difference between life and death in a firefight :))

As for super-turkey puncher - go back to it and get over 25,000 points. It's worth it for the comedy value of what happens afterward.

...and no, I didn't find that out on my own - I read it. ;)

I dunno. I'm slighty worried. I've been playing now for about an hour and no real frame rate drop. And I cant notice any difference in quality with or without the tweaks. Oh well. Can't Complain! :D

i did find this game a hell of alot less tweaky as unreal 2, which slowed down every time a new enemy apeared. im running at 640*480 and ultra graphics on a geforce4 mx420. the computer itself is pretty good, i just need a new vid card.  the game does a really good job at staying smooth. its slow but not to an unplayable level. il give theese tweaks a go and see if it helps any.

Unreal 2 also suffered from the setback of being utterly awful compared to the original in my opinion ;)

It was pretty - but in the end rather poor.

I think it requires at least a DX8 card to run with any smoothness whatsoever.

BTW, I've played through almost 3/4 of the game or so, and I must say the action is getting repetitive. It's still fun, and the weapons have a satisfying punch to them, I'm just getting bored of the
Step 1) Run and pick up health pack

Step 2) Realize it was a trap

Step 3) Have an imp appear above and/or behind you

Step 4) Kill imp with suitably big gun.

Chainsaw!  Run at them with the chainsaw!  *evil insane laugh*

I'm having a hard time believing some of the people say they're playing it on Ultra Quality.  In some interviews from the id folks, Ultra Quality is really made for videocards with 512MB RAM onboard, not system ram.  Then again I switched to ATI and this game bites the big one when it comes to having a Radeon under the hood without tweaking.

I'm running it at medium Quality, 1024X768, all options enabled except for Antialiasing, but I have turned shadows off and it's helped marginally.  My core settings in the Catalyst Control panel are set to "balanced" quality, cept that I make TruForm be enabled by application prefrence.  Everything else is high quality.
30 fps average, on a Radeon 9800 Pro, ATI Catalyst 4.8's with Cat 4.9 beta OpenGL Library installed.
