The command briefing before Lion at the Door where you first hear brief4. The moment that music starts rolling, you just know something is up, and that it's not gonna be good.

The Mission with the Actium and the Lysander.

In the first part of the mission you and the two Deimos class corvettes kick some Shivan asses, but then you could see someting big in the Nebula.

Pandora's Box in Fs1, when the Shivan fighters jump in and start attacking you while you're scanning stuff. You know you're only going to leave one of two ways, and scanning the cargo starts to look like a better plan.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
Definitely the "Dive! Dive! Dive!" message. That one really caught me off guard the first time I played the game, as I was busy thinking about how cool it would be to fly a Mara.

Somebody remind me to get myself a USB joystick so I can (re)start playing FS2 again, m'kay? ;)

Just play with a keyboard like I do. :p

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
The nightmare sequence in Derelict was very well-done, as was any sequence in the Transcendant's nebula. Actually, the first time I had ever been generally freaked out or scared by a FS campaign was in Sync, right after the first jump. The sheer calm of the arrival really made a first impression: something felt wrong, and there was something wrong, and then nebula mission that followed really sealed it. Pretty much any slow and/or nebula mission by Ransom Arceihn is scary enough.

I'll agree with Pandora's Box being good, but the entire Altair series of missions really did it in for me, with the Lucifer arriving and pouring out fighters on the transports, then to the understanding that you and your squad are pretty much alone behind enemy lines.

Of course, nothing can beat just the sheer atmosphere of FS1 in general. The whole game just had an eerie tone to it. Listen to the Monolith track if you don't believe me.

Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

Derelict, when you hear the Narlythotep (probably didn't spell that right...) transmit for the first time. You get the mounting sense something is wrong the whole mission, and then this Lucy starts speaking Shivan and you're like "Oh HELL."

Fair enough.  Not sure how long it'll take, though.

I actually designed that mission with the express purpose of being as scary as possible. :) I think Ransom Arceihn may have one-upped me though. :(

There's a mission in MindGames that made me nervous as hell even though it was me who designed it (Miburo did FRED it though). :)

Lion's Den and Transcend win the award out of missions others might have tried.

Ransom Arceihn is to mission design as Blaise Russel is to campaign making. They both have the ability to do something far better than most of us here, be it by making an utterly terrifying campaign or by pumping out a bunch of campaigns.

I'm still waiting for ST:R nevertheless. Spook Moments x The Other Spooks = Spook^2. :D

First mission on the other side of the nebula. The binary star system, the 3rd knossos, the dozens of sathanii coming in, it all just gives you a "we are in so deep" feeling.

Re: Scariest moments in the Freespace universe.
I think Transcend will have to get my vote, too. Scariest moment:
Spoiler:
When you hear the Transcend trying to communicate with you and says, amongst static, something like "Help me...", *silently* "Help me...", *suddenly, VERY loudly, heavy background static* "PLEASE!....".
Haven't jumped  so high before while playing a game. Not even Dive3 managed to scare me that much.
